Last night, everyone was excited to see Tracy McGrady in his first game as a member of the New York Knicks. He did not disappoint with a 26 point, five assist performance. But as a Knick fan, I found something better: We have our point guard of the future.

Sergio Rodriguez, who was something of a throwaway in the McGrady deal, became someone NY fans might be watching for the next couple seasons. Did he have a monster game? No. Rodriguez only finished with five points and six assists in 26 minutes of play, but he did it with style.

There's also something else I noticed: Sergio Rodriguez played most of the fourth quarter and overtime . Can someone else do that in their debut? D'Antoni and Donnie Walsh already seem to like the guy, and D'Antoni seems to tip his card a bit saying, "I like the way he fits the offense, he brings the speed I want in the offense." Sorry Chris Duhon and Tracy McGrady, but Serge was the guy who made me smirk yesterday.

But wait, what if he stays past this season?

Sergio has a option for this season. Since NY has to renounce most of their players' rights, I expect him to be a unrestricted FA. But I know D'Antoni and Walsh will pick him up for a good price. If D'Antoni has a summer to work with this guy, give him some starter's minutes (his career high in MPG? 15.3) and some players to work with (Chandler, Gallo, and Douglas already there plus maybe LeBron, Bosh, or Rudy Gay), there's no doubt in my mind Sergio Rodriguez could continue his career as a New York Knick....and be successful.
