Alex Ferguson Reassures Darren Fletcher of His Place
Darren Fletcher could be forgiven for becoming increasingly frustrated at the number of games he’s had watch from the sidelines in the last few years, but the 24-year-old is refusing to be discouraged.
Instead of hanging his head in disappointment, Fletcher has continued to work hard and has always seized the opportunity when given the chance.
An outstanding performance against Arsenal in the FA Cup last season, where he grabbed two goals and helped his side to a 4-0 win, demonstrated his ability to step up to the occasion.
With the kick-off to the new season slowly approaching, Fletcher can take heart from his manager’s words of encouragement. “He’s been very unlucky, but he keeps coming back,” said Sir Alex. “He’s an important player to us.
“He always plays well in big games. That’s the great value he brings to the club. He’s a big-game player and we’ve plenty of big games, so he’ll play his part.”
Darren Fletcher will be eager to prove his worth this season and at the same time repay the faith Ferguson has had in him. With a midfield containing the likes of Scholes, Anderson, Ronaldo, Carrick, Hargreaves, Giggs, and Nani, competition for places in the United midfield is fierce, to say the least.
Fletcher deserves credit for his commitment and perpetual dedication to the club, especially when he could probably be a regular in any other team outside the big four of the Premiership. But the Scot is intent on fighting for his place for the reigning English and European Champions.
“You have to take disappointment and use it as a fuel,” Fletcher said. “If you’re not selected then you have to think to yourself ‘I’m going to make an impact if I get on.’ You can’t let your head get down at all.”
But with Ferguson assuring Fletcher of his place in the squad next year, the 24-year-old will have every reason to be buoyant as he prepares for the new season.
