UNC vs. Virginia Basketball: Double Overtime Thriller

Brittany JacobsCorrespondent IFebruary 15, 2010

This game was phenomenal to watch.  It was quite literally back and forth all night. There must have been at least 15 lead changes.

At the half Virginia led 31-32

I won't bore you with the details because the second half was quite literally... one team makes a shot and the other answers.  These two teams were so well matched it was unbelievable.  But I suppose that's what you get when two ACC rivals ranked No. 20 and No. 21 face off.

That brings us to 1:55 left in the game and the score is tied, 63-63.

The last 1:55 goes like this:

UNC's Italee Lucas hits a three.

Monica Wright (UVA) hits a jumper.

UNC misses a three.

Wright gets a rebound and takes it coast to coast putting UVA up 67-66. She has been playing a phenomenal game and doing a great job of getting her team to step up.

With 13 seconds on the clock UNC drives under the basket and passes into the lane. UNC takes a contested jumper and misses.

Tierra Ruffin-Pratt is fouled and hits both free throws.

UVA is now up by three with about three seconds left.

Italee Lucas is given the ball and is contested behind the three point line, she has no choice but to shoot.  She knocks down the three, her eighth of the night, taking the game into OVERTIME!

OT: Throughout this overtime it's back and forth once again.  Anytime UVA scores, UNC answers, and vice versa.

With 30 seconds left, UVA up 74-73.

UNC's Chay Shegog is fouled.  She hits one free throw.

Both teams have a chance to score but neither can capitalize.  The first OT ends in another tie!

DOUBLE OVERTIME! Yes, that's the kind of game this was!

As Double OT comes to a close, UVA is up by two with less than a minute remaining.

UNC inbounds the ball and Cetera DeGraffenreid finds Waltiea Rolle next to the basket, but her close jumper is just short.

UNC is forced to foul with only a few seconds left on the clock.  Virginia knocks down both free throws.

It's a two possession game with nine seconds to go.

North Carolina attempts a three but misses.
