Chelsea Came Close To Greatness, But Machester United Was In The Way
For Chelsea FC it was a season of ups and downs. They lost their manager "the special one" (i guess he saw what was coming), having captain john Terry unfit for quite a while (hey injuries are part of the game), Frank Lampard lost his mum (tough guy for pulling through), and at one point they were well behind in the title race and were counted out.
It reminds me of that saying "money can't buy happiness"
So maybe it can't buy happiness, but it sure brought motivation to the team as they clawed their way back into the premiership race and did the impossible in the Champion's League by forcing Riise to put the ball into the back of his own net and give themselves a chance in the second leg.
It seemed the gods were on Ghelsea's side when they found themselves drawing level with Manchester United thanks to a last minute penalty decision
This was the stuff movies are made of and Chelsea's new manager was beginning to look like the messiah for such amazing moments. All they needed to do was win all their Premiership games and hope Manchester Untied would slip up and then win the Champions League final (which was the reason Abrahamovich bought the club in the first place).
Something tells me that one person knew how this whole thing would end: Arsene Wenger. This guy has seen it all happen from losing the tile to Manchester United on the last day of the season to losing the Champions League final in the last fifteen minutes of the game.
Wenger knew that the only way to defeat the red devils was to make sure that they don't smell blood. So on the day Chelsea drew with Bolton and effectively lost the title Wenger must have been utterly unmoved and unsurprised.
As for the Champions League final, Chelsea were determined not to lose but if there's anyone that knows anything about determination it has to be the Red Devils. Both teams matched each other for goals, speed, shots, and pure nerves.
John Terry bent his neck to an impossible angle to clear the ball off the line, Didier Drogba hit the post (his only shot of the day), Vidic got slapped for his efforts, and Drogba got carded for his unusual show of affection.
In the end the best player in the world missed a penalty and the best player in Chelsea sent the ball to one of his fans in appreciation for their support, Van der Saar might be old but he still got the balls—sorry i meant ball—and then Manchester lifted the trophy again.
It's as close as you come to being great and Chelsea came close. As we look foward to next season I have one piece of advice for Big Phil: "If you want to win the title I advice you to purchase the latest edition of EA Sports FiFA series cause thats the only place your dreams can come true."
See you all at the end of next season when everyone is singing "Manchester Forever"
