Ed Soares Is at It Again "Sonnen Should Fight Maia Next"...What?

Ed Soares, Anderson Silva's manager and spokes person, is quickly becoming one of the most annoying people in the sport today, in my opinion.

As representative and chief of Team Blackhouse MMA, Ed Soares has manufactured himself quite a powerful position, with two current UFC Champions, a WEC Champion, and two top contenders in the Nogueira brothers under the team's umbrella.

However, I feel this influence is misplaced and he is using it to his fighters' advantage, but to the detriment of fans. In a recent phone interview with Sportsnet.ca, he had this to say:

"At the moment, we are completely focused on Anderson's title defence versus Vitor Belfort (at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi). We've spoken with Chael on many occasions and have the utmost respect for him. He's never really come across in this manner, and it's obvious he's just drumming up hype in hopes to get a bout with Anderson.

If this is what the UFC wants then fine, but if you look at this logistically, Sonnen should fight Demian Maia first. Demian beat him up easily, by submission, so why not make them fight first, to determine who gets a shot at the title?"

He would go onto add:

"It's funny, but really, who actually listens to what Chael Sonnen has to say? The only time people listen is when he talks about Anderson. Who is he, really? If you walk down the street and you mention his name, does anyone really know who this guy is? Likely not, but if you mention Anderson Silva, people know the name."

This, of course, has happened before. Quite recently, in fact, with the Dan Henderson saga post UFC 100. On that occasion, Soares tried to get the UFC to match Henderson and Marquardt up, despite the fact that the winner of Henderson vs Bisping had been offered a title shot against Anderson Silva.

Henderson, of course, has now left the UFC, but is Ed Soares up to his old tricks? It's highly possible, because Sonnen is a legitimate threat that offers Anderson a very unexciting fight both commercially and in terms of his reputation.

But Sonnen should not be fighting Maia next. For one, they have already fought. Secondly, Maia is not quite ready for a title shot, as the Marquardt 20 sec KO is still fresh in the memory. And thirdly, Sonnen has earned his shot, having beat three ranked contenders in a row.

This is where my annoyance for Soares comes from. Sonnen vs Marquardt was clearly determined as a No. 1 contender fight in advance. Consequently, Soares should be keeping his mouth shut and like he said focusing his fighter on the upcoming fight with Vitor Belfort. It's the UFC's job to make the matches.

As I said, it's happened before, but the UFC really needs to stay true to its word on this occasion, despite the more marketable fighter Marquardt losing. Sonnen earned the shot, and despite his boring in-ring style, I actually find him to be one of the more articulate and entertaining fighters outside of it.

The more I hear from Ed Soares, the more I dislike him and the more I want someone to beat Anderson Silva, just to shut him up! So this is to you, you little loud Brazilian, keep you mouth shut and stop ducking your fighters out of fights. Stick to translating and stop match making!!
