ONETIME WEEKLY - Currie Cup Hots Up

Anna, is gone, Maria is gone in fact it has been a Wimbledon of upsets in the woman’s section. In the men’s section, besides the 3^rd seed being knocked out Federer and Nadal are both through to the ¼ finals. Who will take the championship is still anybody’s guess. I personally would like to see Federer take it and I think Venus Williams will take the ladies singles as she is the most experienced lady left.

 

The DurbanJuly will take place this Saturday and yes we are all asking who will take it? (A race first run and 1897 for those of you that don’t know!). I don’t know, my friend that knows horses has told me to forget it. So after looking at the race card, I suggest that you take note of the following, the race is over 2200m. It is a handicap so horses are generally carrying the same weight even if the jockey has not eaten for two weeks. Look at the horses last few races and see how they have been performing. If the horse is good over 1400/1600m and weak over 2000m then chances are they will not shape over 2200m. If the horse has not won a race in a year then it might not be the horse to choose, on the other hand even if the horse has won everything over the last six months then he may have blown his bolt. My favorites are Pocket Power (1), Bound By Honour (11), Russian Sage (15), Galant Gagnant (16), River Jetez (19) and Wendywood (20) for the fillies. This may change, but this is what my limited knowledge says. Please remember to GAMBLE responsibly.

 

In the rugby scene Australiadid give the French a good can of whip ass 34-13, but then again it was not the strongest French side ever chosen. Not that one ever knows which French team will arrive on the day. Tri Nations will kick off at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington New Zealandon Saturday with the All Blacks playing the World Champions the Springboks. Hopefully Schalk gets the nod ahead of Watson, but then again with De Villiers anything is possible. Go Bokke!!! Even Eddie Jones believes that the Springboks should do it this year.

 

The Currie cup saw the Sharks get their 1^st5 pointer of the season, seeing them on the top of the log. The Valke beat Griquas the Cheetah’s beat the hapless Lions that will now be playing at a Stadium that will change to the name of a soft drink. This will mean the end to the fearsome name of Ellis Park. Look what happened to the Sharks when Kingspark became ABSA Park. The game of the weekend was Problems Vs Blue Bulls. WP showed some strong character to come from behind, something they like down in Cape Town JThe Sharks did not play their rugby and not surprising John Plumtree had very little positive to say about his charges, and infact said the Sharks would get murdered in PTA on Saturday if they play like they did on Friday night.

 

South Africa’s cricketers have started their tour on Englandand got off to a solid start with 100’s for Kallis and Amla. Although JK had to retire hurt on a 160 he is likely to make a full recovery in time for the first test. The Black Caps beat Englandto take the ODI series 3-1. Australiabeat the Windies again by 7 wickets yesterday in an ODI.

 

Onto the best soccer that I have seen for a long time! I even felt it was better than the last World Cup. Spain beat Germany 1-0 in the final, their first win in a major event in 44 years. They were the only team to go through unbeaten and they played the best football over the three week period. The Dutch and Croatia were disappointing and did not make the semi’s. Russia did well and so did Turkey, they have a young team, like the Spanish and could do very well in 2010 should they make it.
