Tennessee Football: Rocky Top Round Up Message Board 7/1

Michael ShibleySenior Analyst IJuly 1, 2008

Greetings again Tennessee Volunteer fans.  It is time for another edition of the Rocky Top Roundup Message Board.

Every season there are new strengths and weaknesses to evaluate and build around to accentuate the positives and hide or correct the negatives.  Last year, one of the Vols biggest weaknesses was their secondary, because of their lack of depth and experience starting three true freshmen.

However, this year the secondary is a huge strength because of the experience from last year and because of the return of Demetrice Morley.

Most Vol fans would agree that the defensive front seven is the biggest question mark going into this season.  With Jerod Mayo declaring for the Draft early and the graduation of Xavier Mitchell, Ryan Karl, and Antonio Renyolds, the Big Orange is very thin along the defensive line while being inexperienced at linebacker.

So the question for this week is:  Who will step up and be the leader in the defensive front seven?

Every year the Vols defense has a guy in the front seven that no one wants to mess with: Al Wilson, Leonard Little, John Henderson, Justin Harrell, Kevin Burnett, Albert Haynsworth, and Jerod Mayo to name a few.  Messing with these guys had bad idea written all over it.

Who is going to be the biggest, meanest, and best player on defense this year?

My vote is for Dan Williams.  At 6'3" 310 lbs. he really made an inside impact last year, and got that SEC East saving field goal block against Kentucky.  I think he can step up and be a great run stopper in the middle.

What do you think?  Write your own article or leave a comment.  I want to know what the rest of Orange Nation has to say.
