Why Is Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik Dodging Paul Williams?

Luis VazquezJan 30, 2010

As the title says, I can't understand why Kelly Pavlik keeps calling out Paul Willaims and then decides to fight someone else. It is one thing when your an older fighter and it's time to pass the torch. But Pavlik isn't old enough to be passing any torch. His career is highlighted by defeating Jermaine Taylor twice, who is now currently semi-retired.Ā

Maybe Kelly Pavlik is another victim of Bernard Hopkins? Every person that Hopkins has beat has been exposed. If you don't believe me look at his list. What has Felix Trinidad done? Or what has Antonio Tarver done since B-Hop beat him? Those guys have been missing in action since he exposed their main flaws. What an expensive way to find out what your flaw is if you ask me.

I brought Bernard up because I wanted to say this, since B-Hop beat Pavlik, Pavlik has been dodging top notch competition. Most boxing experts predicted that Paul Williams would beat Pavlik after they agreed to fight. Pavlik postponed the fight once, then tried to postpone the fight after he said that the staph infection almost killed him. Paul Williams called the fight off after he realized Pavlik wasn't going to meet his December 5, 2009 HBO date. Just 2 weeks after Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez agreed to fight on the December 5 date, Pavlik agreed to fight Miguel Espino on December 19?

Pavlik goes from almost dying to agreeing to fight Espino just 2 weeks later so he could retain his belts? So what if he decided fighting Paul Williams wasn't good for his health? Fine, it would be no big deal. But not only did he duck Paul Williams, he called him out and accused Williams of not wanting to fight.Ā

So Paul Williams fights Sergio Martinez, (who is actually tougher than people realize), and wins a close, great fight. What's next if your Paul Williams? Probably Kelly Palik since all of the build up and Pavlik accused him of not wanting to fight right? Wrong, Pavlk is close to inking a deal to fight Sergio Martinez on April 17.

Bottom line, I wrote all of that above to say this, please don't buy into Kelly Pavlik. I honestly feel that Pavlik is taking advantage of his fan base by signing these less than stellar fights since he lost to Hopkins. If Pavlik wants to fight mediocre competition, fine, do it. Just don't go calling out a top-5 pound-for-pound fighter and then ducking a fight with him. And for the record, I believe Sergio Martinez will outpoint him, and as long as the fight isn't in Youngstown, Ohio, he will win.
