NCAA Men's Basketball:Another #1 Bites The Dust,Who Deserves To Be #1?

Travis BickmannJan 28, 2010

Well what do you know! Another #1 team went down for the third time this season. The #1 on the short end of the stick this go around belongs to the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky had everything going for them with recruiting the best freshman in the NCAA in John Wall, getting the programs 2000th win against the Drexel Dragons on December 21, 2009 with a 88-44 victory, and then they finally got to be #1 in the rankings.

But in their first game as the #1 team in the nation, the Wildcats felt what it was like to be playing in games with a target on your backĀ as the #1 team. They fell in their first game as #1 to South Carolina 68-62. Kentucky joins Kansas and Texas as the other two #1 teams that have been defeated this season.

Kansas was the pre season #1 on held on to that ranking until they lost in a game at Tennessee by the score of 76-68, and only dropped two spots to the #3 ranking where they are today. The following week Texas which had been #2 took over the top position. They held on to this ranking until they fell to conference foe Kansas State 71-62 at Kansas State, giving Kentucky the #1 ranking.

So with Kentucky falling in its first game as #1, the question that arises is: Who Deserves to be the next #1? Well according to the way the rankings are now it would to be as if Kansas would move up from the #2 spot. I don't think that Kansas should be the #1 team because they already had their chance at it and lost it. There are two other teams that deserve it: Villanova (19-1), and Syracuse (20-1).

I believe that the team that should be #1 when the new rankings come out on Monday should be the: Syracuse Orangemen. They are 7-1 in Big East play with their only loss coming to #17 Pittsburgh that was played at Syracuse.Ā Not only that their only loss has come from a Top 25 teams, they are 20-1 overall and have defeated more Top 25 teams than Villanova has.

Villanova is worthy of the #1 ranking with its 19-1 overall record (8-0 in the Big East) and off to its best start in school history but they lost to unranked Temple 75-65, which will be one of their key losses come to the NCAA Tournament.

Ā It's no question that these two teams will be battling it out for the Big East title, but I think that with its victories over more Top 25 teams that Syracuse has the upper hand for now.

So here are what I think the Top 5 teams should be when the new rankings come out on Monday:

1) Syracuse (20-1)

2) Villanova (19-1)

3)Kansas (20-1)

4) Kentucky (19-1)

5) Michigan St. (18-3)

Yeah people will argue that Texas should be ahead of Michigan St. but Texas lost two in a row including a 14 point loss to UCONN on the road 88-74, while Michigan St. has been in some close games but they have found ways to win them and also they are 8-0 in the Big Ten.
