Baylor-Kansas State: Bears Prove To Have Solid Depth Despite Latest Loss

Denton RamseyJan 28, 2010

Regardless of Baylor's leading scorer LaceDarius Dunn being held to just nine points against Kansas State, the No. 24 Bears still only fell by just two against the No. 11 Wildcats on Tuesday night at Waco’s Ferrell Center.

Which proves, at least in my opinion, the talent and depth of coach Scott Drew’s 2010 scrappy Bears.

“In a game like this, one team doesn’t necessarily always lose the game—I think the other team sometime wins the game,” Drew told Baylor’s Official Athletic Site. “I think tonight that two teams competed extremely hard and I think that K-State just made some big shots and some big plays."

“I think they earned the win tonight. Obviously [Jacob] Pullen down the stretch was huge. Credit them for making the plays. I am not disappointed with our effort. We didn’t shoot it as well as we have and credit K-State’s defense with some of that. I thought we competed.”

Tweety Carter led the way for the Bears in scoring in their two-point loss to the Wildcats, garnering 23 points along with four assists and three steals.

Also contributing for Baylor was Anthony Jones (12 PTS, 9 REB), Quincy Acy (10 PTS), Ekpe Udoh (14 REB, 8 PTS) and A.J. Walton (6 PTS, 2 REB in 14 MIN).

“It was pretty physical out there,” Jones said. “They denied us pretty high and got us out of our offense in the first half. We couldn’t run the system that we wanted to, so we had to adjust a little bit.”

Despite the adjustments, Drew’s Bears’ 11-game home court win streak ended with their loss to K-State.

“It’s very frustrating, but we have to let this one go and learn from ourselves and prepare for Texas,” Carter said.

Baylor returns to the hardwood this weekend in Austin when they face the highly touted Texas Longhorns on Saturday afternoon.

Baylor 71, Massachusetts 45

Thank God for Waco’s Ferrell Center, especially if you’re a Baylor Bears basketball fan.

Baylor returned home this weekend, bouncing back from a tough road loss at No. 3 Kansas by destroying the University of Massachusetts 71-45 on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.

The Bears hoped to continue with a solid performance on both ends of the court when they hosted No. 11 Kansas State Tuesday night.

Unfortunately, Baylor came up short against Kansas State in a 76-74 heartbreaking loss at home to the end Bears 11-game win streak at the Ferrell Center.

“These guys [Drew’s Baylor Bears] are good; these guys are an NCAA team; I mean, God are they good,” Kansas State coach Frank Martin told Baylor’s Official Athletic Site following the Wildcats two-point victory. “They are long; they are athletic; they have got one of the toughest kids in the league at point guard."

“They have a two guard that can score with the best of them around the country; they got that size on that front line and Quincy Acy comes in off the bench and he is as athletic as anybody in this league. They are a good basketball team.”
