Tim Tebow to Focus on Family for His Super Bowl Debut

Josh McCainJan 27, 2010

Yesterday, news broke that a conservative Christian group called Focus on the Family had bought some advertising space from CBS during the Super Bowl.

Their subject? None other than Heisman Trophy winner and two-time BCS National Champion Tim Tebow.

According to the Associated Press, the ad is supposed to celebrate life and the family. This celebration is with Pam Tebow (Tim's mom) telling a story regarding her pregnancy with Tim.

According to Mrs. Tebow, it was a very difficult pregnancy, and she thought briefly about aborting her baby.

She didn't, and I guess you can say the rest is history.

For Tim, yes. For this ad, no.

Many people are in an uproar about this ad. It was the topic of the Lavar Arrington Show on 106.7 The Fan here in Washington D.C. yesterday evening, and the controversy is gathering steam.

Many callers (along with Arrington and co-host Chad Dukes) said it shouldn't air because it is an anti-abortion ad, and we don't need to politicize the Super Bowl.

However, the Super Bowl has already been politicized. Have they and many others forgotten that President Obama (then senator) bought a 30-second ad for his campaign in 2008?

I'm not trying to get too political here, but last I checked this was a free country and a free market. If a group has the money to advertise during the Super Bowl, and the station airing the game approves the ad (CBS released a statement to the AP that the script meets their standards), then it should be allowed to air.

Also, no one has seen the ad yet. All that anyone knows is it's about Pam Tebow deciding to have her baby instead of aborting it. I'm sure there will be a message about God within the commercial, but you know what? Get over it.

Over the past decade we've had many commercials with a barely-dressed Brittany Spears hawking Pepsi and all the flesh GoDaddy.com can show on network television. What is wrong with a group talking about family?

I'm sure a lot of people reading this think of me as a Bible-thumping nut; I'm not, I assure you.

But I am a firm believer in the Bill of Rights, which give us our freedoms to worship whatever God we choose and to air Super Bowl commercials with sexy ladies.

You might not agree with Tim Tebow's ad that will air during the Super Bowl, and that's fine—you don't have to—but yelling to have it banned until you're hoarse isn't the answer either.

We can't appease everyone. If this ad airs (and I hope it does) there will be groups who won't like it, and if it gets pulled there will be others who don't like that.

I offer a solution, though. This commercial is airing during the Super Bowl, right? So, shut up, and watch the damn game!
