Let's Keep The All-Star and Pro Bowl Voting to The Pro's

Brian SegenJan 26, 2010

Lets face the fact, the all-star and pro bowl voting is completely unjust. We leave it up the fans to decide who the best player is each year, when in reality all we are doing is throwing a popularity contest out there. The big name players from each position doesn't matter the sport, there numbers, or there playing time get in.

Defensively Aaron Schobel of the Buffalo Bills was at the top of his game, he had one of the best seasons of a defensive end this season. Is his name anywhere on that AFC roster? Of course not. You got two starters voted in from the Super Bowl Colts which of course means they will be replaced by Mario Williams and Kyle Vandon Boch; not to take anything away both great players but none of the _ players had the numbers (54 tackles, 10 sacks, 1 interception, 1 TD, 3 FF, and 1 FR) that Aaron Schobel did. So why didn't he get in. Simple, because he was on AFC worst Buffalo Bills.

Sheldon Brown, shutdown cornerback opposite Asante Samual of the Philadelphia Eagles. Best year of his career (51 total tackles, five interceptions with one for a touchdown, 17 passed defended, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery for a touchdown) did not make it. Yes he is on a very media crazy and huge media market team, but outside of Philadelphia he is just another face in a helmet.

We move onto the NBA; a league that was once run by the biggest sports names in the country such as Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlin, Dr. J., Bill Russell, Larry Bird, and the list goes on. Now a dying league. So come All-Star weekend in Dallas, who do we expect to see running the courts?

Well this year there are some very familiar faces but not all deserving. The Lebron James's and Kobe Bryant's will be there and deservedly so. They are still both at the top of there game and will be for years to come. But what about some other starters? Here is a name to throw out, Allen Iverson aka "The Answer" The Philadelphia 76ers brought Iverson back this year which was no doubt ably a stunt to fill in the almost empty seats for a team that sits currently at 15-29 with the fifth worst record in the NBA. It was a smart move, it worked. The first game back as a Sixers the arena was sold out. This does show one thing, he is one of the most fan-loved players in the NBA and most certainly the heart and sole of 76ers fans. But does all that mean his numbers were deserving enough to be a starter in the all star game. A.I. is averaging 14.6 PPG, 2.8 RPG, and 4.3APG which are all career lows. There is no doubting a talent like Iverson and what he has done for the city of Philadelphia and the sport of basketball, but bottom line is it wasn't a deserving nod to Dallas.

It doesn't matter the sport, fans are bias to there own teams. Fan loyalty is a great thing to have but when it comes down to deciding who the best players are each league each year, it should be going by numbers and not fan base. We can keep doing this year in and year out but sooner or later something has got to give. I am all for giving the due respect to great players but if there are players greater that season they should get the recognition and reward for playing as so. Year in and year out the system has been this way and year in and year out great players, breakout players have been getting snubbed, so when will it stop. Regardless of who picks which players get in or out of the Event of each prospective sport the fans will still be there; so lets give the smaller more deserving guys a shot.
