NY Jets' Lito Sheppard: A Possible Target of Cleveland Browns GM Tom Heckert?

Daniel WolfJan 26, 2010

New York Jets' cornerback Lito Sheppard had an up and down season in 2009 and during the playoffs, but new Cleveland Browns general manager Tom Heckert might be calling him soon.

Sheppard was initially drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles—and scouted by Heckert—in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft and subsequently played with them until before the 2009 season. He was then traded to the Jets for a fifth round pick in the 2009 draft and a conditional pick in the 2010 draft.

A two-time Pro Bowler in 2004 and 2006, Sheppard saw his playing time decline with the Jets and was most recently benched for the AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts. He did see playing time during the game due to injuries to other cornerbacks.

Sheppard has been known to have a nose for the ball in the past with the Eagles and has also returned three interceptions for touchdowns.

The Heckert connection in Cleveland means that if the Jets are not sold on Sheppard's abilities anymore, then Herckert may actually pursue a trade for the cornerback, unless the Jets cut him from their roster in the offseason.

He would be filling a huge need in the Browns' secondary since their only stable player at cornerback is starter Eric Wright.

Whether or not Sheppard would be a starter would remain to be seen, since many mock drafts are predicting the Browns to draft Florida prospect Joe Haden, who may be able to start on opening day of the 2010 season.

Even if Sheppard is not a starter, he will fill a big need in nickel and dime coverages since the Browns' secondary really does not have much depth.

Heckert may pull a trade; however, if it costs the Browns a draft pick, then Sheppard may not be wearing an orange helmet in 2010.

Both president Mike Holmgren and Heckert covet their 11 drafts picks going into April's draft.

Sheppard may be 28, but he will also bring needed knowledge to the position and help mentor the younger Browns cornerbacks.
