Should the Baltimore Ravens Take Interest in Antonio Cromartie?

Old AccountJan 26, 2010

Since the playoff loss to the New York Jets a few weeks ago, the San Diego Chargers are revamping the team for 2010.

Whether letting players enter free agency, or trading some Pro-Bowl caliber players away, San Diego is opening up a lot of cash for the uncapped year.

One of those players is cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who has one year remaining on his deal. Though he is a threat of getting the interception, he has at times shown his weakness in man to man.

With Cromartie potentially on the market, should the Baltimore Ravens take interest? ESPN.com reported that the Ravens, along with division rivals Cleveland and Pittsburgh, could have interest.

All three of these teams should take interest, due to issues within the secondary. However, the Ravens could potentially give San Diego a decent enough of a draft pick to encourage San Diego's front office.

With the idea of draft picks being much more valued in the NFL, especially by Ozzie Newsome, San Diego may have to accept a lower price for the cornerback then what they feel he is worth.

Could a trade for Cromartie be as beneficial as trading for a wide receiver? Baltimore is linked to Brandon Marshall, who obviously will bring a big price tag if the Ravens wish to make an offer.

However, Cromartie can be had for a much lower price, most likely one or two mid rounds picks. Cromartie has the ability to cover some of the best receivers in the league, which can be a perfect setup for the questions the Ravens defense faces.

This would put Dominique Foxworth, who showed his potential as a solid corner, second on the depth chart.

Lardarius Webb, assuming he returns from his injury, would be a great cover corner against the slot receivers on many of these dominant passing teams.

Normally we don't see Ozzie Newsome complete a trade involving draft picks, especially for another corner which would require giving up most of the cash to.

But Cromartie can bring another dimension to this Ravens defense by playing like one of the best in the league. With an improvement at corner, the Baltimore defense could become the same blitzing D it was in the past.
