Football Isn't a Fair Sport!
At this rate, we shall never have a rub of the green. One might argue that Algeria's Desert foxes got poetic justice when thay eliminated Mali at this year's CAN finals, for they were on the receiving end of blatant match fixng at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Having already beaten eventual finalists West German, a Lakhdar Belloumi inspired Algeria were on course for a place in he knock out phase when the Germans conspired to get a 1-0 result that eliminated the North Africans. Mali wanted the Confederation of African Football to punish Algeria of playing a 0-0 draw with Angola, they claimed that the result was fixed.Ā IĀ actually thought that they should have protested the head to head modus operandi that beliminated them. Contrary to the spirit of the game which calls for a level playing field, referees habitually favour top teams against paper weights and never get redress.
Uefa officials have for example made a habit of cheating London club Chelsea. You would have thought that the blues would never suffer an injustice equivalent to the one they got when Lubos Michel awarded a phantom goal to Liverpool in 2005.
Unfortunately for them, Tom Henning Ovrebo surpassed Michel and refused to award four slid penalties that would have put Chealsea in the Champions League final. Will what went around finally come back around? I doubt.
There is the case of Geoff Hurst's goal in the 1966 World Cup final against German. Did the ball cross the line? No. Did German get recourse for the manner of their loss? No. England did hoever suffer similar injustice when Diego Maradona finally eliminated Bobby Robsom's infinitely talented side courtesy of the infamous 'HandĀ Of God'.
The latest was when Egyptian captain Hassan on his 170th appearance took the freekick and it was punched the ball to the cross bar and it bounced a cm away from the line but theĀ referee awarded the goal of which seemed to be the winnng goal in extra time for the Phoroahs, thus making it the 3rd consecutive tim the Indomitable lions have beenĀ defeated by the Nort Africans. Did the ball cross the line? No it didn't.
The cardinal rule here is that host teams and teams deemed to be superior are always given favours. This brings me to the final question is Football a fair sport or we need videos inĀ soccer?Ā Ā
