Kentucky's Calipari Calls Out ESPN Reporter on Live Television

John NeumanJan 25, 2010

During a live telecast on ESPN earlier today, UK basketball coach John Calipari launched an uppercut at an ESPN reporter during a live interview for the network's Sportscenter program.

Calipari was phoned by the network for a live interview, which was conducted by ESPN's John Buccigross.Ā  Some questions were probed on the spot byĀ Buccigross, including a question which poked at Calipari's past with Memphis.

After briefly discussing Kentucky's first number 1 AP ranking since 2002-03, Buccigross redirected the discussion toward's Memphis.Ā  Calipari said that he believed luck has played a role in the Wildcat's success, but the team should be proud of their ranking.Ā  Buccigross went on to say "...and certainly had you had [luck] against Kansas, certainlyĀ your Memphis team would have been national champion."

Calipari responded by questioning the integrity of Buccigross, "Now why would you bring that up, John?Ā  That was two years ago...I thought we were going to talk about Kentucky."

ESPN's Buccigross then backpedaled and said, "Let's take a 20-second timeout."

An upset Calipari responded, "You must be from Western, Pennsylvania. John, where are you from?"

Buccigross acknowledged that he was from Pittsburgh, and Calipari responded by saying, "Okay, so you're a jagoff, basically you'reĀ a jagoff."

With a shocking odd look on his face, Buccigross changed the topic and the interview closed out.

Calipari was a National Finalist with the Memphis Tigers in the 2007-08 Men's Basketball Tournament where his teamĀ was edged out by the KansasĀ JayhawksĀ on a last second shot which ultimately led to their championship.

In mid 2009, the NCAA found Calipari's 2007-08 team guilty of NCAA violations and the Tigers vacated their appearance in the Final Four, which includes their appearance in the National Championship Game.

Calipari's #1 UK Wildcats are currently 19-0 (4-0 SEC), and face the South Carolina Gamecocks (11-8, 2-3 SEC) on Tuesday Night in Columbia.
