To Retire or Not To Retire: That's Brett Favre's Question

Chris StephensJan 24, 2010

With the Minnesota Viking's 31-28 overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship Game, the question on many people's mind is not going to be who is going to win the Super Bowl. Instead, the focus will turn to the drama of whether one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time will retire or not.

Few people can question Favre as a top quarterback. Few team can question his love for the game of football. But, could he really endure yet another year inside the huddle?

Looking at what the 40-year old quarterback accomplished this year, and the fact that he came up one game short of the Super Bowl, would it be wrong to believe he'll be back for another year? Minnesota Vikings fans would like to see it, and any pure football fan who doesn't pay attention to what happens in the off season would love to see it as well.

Sure, Favre has been the teenage drama queen over the last few off seasons. Sure, we know those tears weren't real when he announced his retirement the first time. Sure, we would all like for him to ride out like a cowboy in the sunset. But, when it comes to quarterbacks who know how to win, Favre is one of the best.

Looking past that interception that cost the Vikings' the game Sunday. And, looking past the interception he threw in his last game at Green Bay, I think it's safe to say that without Brett Favre, the Minnesota Vikings don't make the playoffs, much less the NFC Championship Game. I'll even go further in saying that without Favre, the Vikings go 6-10 and are picking around number ten in the NFL Draft.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm ready to see Favre retire. I think he's had his moment in the sun and it's time to stop wanting the spotlight always on himself. It's time he let someone else have their moment in the sun, however, I don't think it is in him to leave the game, especially since he is still at his best. Ranked ninth in yards passing, second in TD passes thrown and third in completion percentage, Favre is still one of the best gunslingers in the league. Not to mention the fact that his quarterback rating is second best in the league.

So, the question isโ€”Brett Favre, do you retire or not? Do you have it in you one more year to get the Minnesota Vikings to the Super Bowl for the first time since Super Bowl IV?

Come on Brett Favre. The world is waiting.
