Ahmad Dixon: Back to The Bears
As an Auburn fan, I must admit that I sincerely hoped that Ahmad Dixon would choose to play college football at Auburn. He came to Auburn's football camp and was initially very interested. Then again, he has shown interest in LSU, Alabama, Texas A&M but somewhere along the way he committed to Baylor. Then, I feel quite sure that Lane Kiffin and his staff painted a pretty picture to Dixon by telling him that he would come in and be the next Eric Berry. That is how a lot of coaches play with the minds of recruits. For example, a linebacker prospect from the state of Alabama originally stated that playing time was his number one priority for choosing a school. But then, he chose Alabama after Nick Saban came along and told him that he could come to Alabama and be the next Rolando McClain. C.J. Mosley is a good prospect but he will not likely be the next Rolando McClain. Linebackers like McClain are few and far between. In the back of C.J. Mosley's mind, he has to know that playing time will be very limited for quite some time at the University of Alabama. Saban has recruited two number one classes and his class for 2010 is currently in the top three. The depth chart for linebackers and defensive backs at Alabama consists of more than a dozen for each one. Looks like a lot of quality athletes will be riding the bench at Bama. Ahmad Dixon made an intelligent choice by not choosing Alabama and then he made another intelligent choice when he dropped Tennessee and came back to Baylor. Thankfully, it doesn't appear that Baylor has a coach that paints pretty pictures and from what I understand, he is one humdinger of a coach. Still, I have to question if Ahmad Dixon is committed 100 percent to Baylor.
There is no doubt about it: Ahmad Dixon is one of the best safety prospects in the country and most likely he will be a very interested player to watch in the coming years. On the other hand, he has committed four times to different programs over the last several months and that is certainly not a quality that I would look for in a player if I were a head coach at major program. Ahmad Dixon will no doubt get playing time at Baylor. The best thing about Baylor football right now is the coach. As a result, will a better job come along in the next couple of years? If it does, will Ahmad Dixon transfer to another school? I hope not. Baylor is not known as a powerhouse and by choosing Baylor, Ahmad Dixon will not experience conference championships. Most importantly, he will receive excellent coaching and he will be able to make a name for himself with the hopes of playing in the NFL.
To be honest, I must admit that I really wanted Ahmad Dixon to choose Auburn at one time. The starting safety for Auburn suffered a neck injury this past year and he may or may not be back next year for his senior season. Even if he does return, I thought that Ahmad Dixon would have had an excellent opportunity at Auburn. Right now, there are several defensive backs in the NFL that once played for Auburn. Just the other day, I thought to myself, "why wouldn't Dixon want to become part of a top five recruiting class at Auburn instead of going back to Baylor and being part of a class that is ranked 46th. Since then, I have certainly changed my tune. At this point, this Auburn fan is glad Dixon has chosen Baylor. Unfortunately, Baylor fans still have to worry that Dixon will turn again and choose someone else. If he does, he will most likely hurt his career. Baylor is the right home for Dixon. Hopefully, he will not be so wishy-washy once he signs his letter of intent and begins school. Baylor landed a great recruit in Ahmad Dixon and for that, congratulations. Keep your fingers crossed that he stays.
