Not The Most Gifted But Kuyt Proves His Worth In a Time Of Need!
He has received his fair share of criticism during his time at Anfield but his performance against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night proved just how important Dirk Kuyt is to this Liverpool side.
He may not rank along the superstars of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard at Liverpool but every team needs a player like Dirk Kuyt to deliver.
Kuyt isn't technically gifted, as has been pointed out time and again with regards to his first touch - and his finish but he doesn't moan about where he is played, he goes out and gives everything for 90 minutes. That has not gone unnoticed by his manager as Benitez has handed him the armband when both Gerrard and Carragher have been absent - an example of what a great attitude can do for a footballer.
As has been mentioned, he isn't without his flaws, the Tottenham game showed that. In fact it summed him up perfectly.
A very well taken goal early on after combining with Alberto Aquilani shows that Kuyt is a good deputy in the absence of Torres.
We also saw the bad, as Kuyt squandered two chances, which can only be described as sitters but later on showed a lot of bottle after scoring the second penalty. A finish just as good as the first which can be difficult when you think you have scored in the first place.
But let us not forget Kuyt's greatest asset - work rate! Off the ball he kept running and tried to lead Liverpool into a pressing game which had Spurs rattled earlier on.
He may not be liked by some fans but Liverpool is better of with Dirk Kuyt available than not!
