BYU-Wyoming: Haws' Hot Hand Leads Cougars Past Afam Muojeke-Less Cowboys

David MortimerJan 20, 2010

On a day when top shooters Jimmer Fredette and Jackson Emery went cold, BYU freshman sensation Tyler Haws picked a good day to stay hot.

Haws led all scorers with a career-high 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting to lead No. 13/14 BYU past Wyoming, 81-66, at the Marriott Center. Haws shot 4-of-5 from three-point range, made all four of his free throws, and added six rebounds.

Besides his clutch shooting, Haws was involved in the game's other pivotal moment. Wyoming forward Afam Muojeke fell to the ground injured after successfully defending  Haws on a drive to the hoop midway through the first half.

Muojeke, the Mountain West Conference's second-leading scorer, did not return. Preliminary reports suggest Muojeke suffered a ruptured patella tendon and may be out for the year.

Adam Waddell led the Cowboys (8-11, 1-4 MWC) in Muojeke's absence with 15 points, five rebounds, and three blocks. Wyoming has lost three in a row but has an entire week to prepare for its next game at home against Utah.

Fredette played without the long-sleeved undershirt he wore to cover up a previous allergic reaction to medication for his mononucleosis. He finished with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Emery struggled from the field, making only four of his 11 shots, but he made up for it on the defensive end with five steals and a block. He finished with 15 points.

The Cougars (19-1, 4-0 MWC) have now won 14 straight and are one win shy of tying the best start in school history. BYU's 1987-88 team began 20-1 before losing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, finishing 26-6.

BYU will hit the road to face San Diego State on Saturday and New Mexico next Wednesday.
