As we are a quarter of the way into the ACC conference season, I started thinking about which ACC players I'd want on my team if I were creating a personal All-Star team.
Now, this is not necessarily an All-ACC team or a team based on potential. These are the five ACC guys I want playing for me this year, and how I'd put the team together.
SG Jon Scheyer: Duke Blue Devils
Jon Scheyer may be the ACC's most unassuming star since Mark Price at Georgia Tech many years ago. You see Scheyer, and you think, "Come on, that guy is one of the ACC's best players?" Then he drops 25 points and 8 assists on you. His ball handling and defense are better than you think; in fact, he does everything better than you think. He just finds a way to score. He's averaging nearly 19 points and 6 assists a game and leads the ACC in three-pointers made a game.
PG Ismael Smith: Wake Forest Demon Deacons
I went back and forth between Smith and Greivis Vasquez of Maryland. In the end I liked Smith a little better because of his quickness. It's kind of thin in the ACC this year with PGs, not like a few years ago when you had Raymond Felton, Jarrett Jack, and Chris Paul running around. Smith is averaging 12 points and nearly 6 assists a game. He's third in the ACC in steals, too. He might have trouble defending bigger point guards, but I'll take my chances with Ismael. I think he's the ACC's best pure PG.
G Malcolm Delaney: Virginia Tech Hokies
At 6'3" Delaney is a bit small to play small forward, but he's too talented to be left off my starting lineup. Delaney may be the lineup's best in all-around play. As the ACC's leading scorer, he can score. He can shoot free throws, as evidenced by his 84 percent mark at the line. He gets others involved with an average of 4.2 assists a game. Oh yeah, he can shoot threes, too and is hitting nearly 40 percent from long range.
F Trevor Booker: Clemson Tigers
I couldn't think of having this team without Trevor Booker. If Booker were two inches taller, he would be 6'7" and a lottery pick. He was the ACC's leading rebounder last year and is averaging 8.4 boards a game this year. Then throw in 15 points a game on top of that. He's fourth in the ACC in FG percentage, and he's good for taking a couple of guys off the dribble a game. He's a banger, and he'll complement my other forward perfectly.
F Gani Lawal: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The arrival of high school All-American Derrick Favors has freed up Lawal, and he's taken advantage. Lawal is a true low post player. That's what I like about him and Booker. I like my inside guys to stay inside unless there's that hard-to-find 6'4" to 6'7" swing man. Lawal is scoring 15 points a game with 9 boards. He's worked hard on his FT shooting as well. Last year, he shot 55 percent from the charity stripe, and this year he's at 68 percent.
