Today (2010): History is made; Dick Vitale finally announces a Utah Jazz game

It is on this night when the sports world’s collective eyes and ears will be trained on ESPN, who unveils the second annual edition of the much anticipated basketball “Announcer Swap” which will see NBA announcers Mike Breen, Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy calling a college basketball game and college announcers Dick Vitale and Dan Shulman calling the NBA game.

See, the NBA guys are announcing college basketball and the college guys are announcing the NBA game.  How crazy is that?

Last year, when pressed to explain why ESPN believed this stunt would hold meaning to any normal fan who really just wants to watch a basketball game, executive Norby Williamson’s response was that they were simply trying to “cultivate basketball fans“.   Prepare to be cultivated, America.

Again, to be clear, ESPN is not at all trying to insert themselves as the story in place of the actual sporting event at all.  Just cultivating basketball fans.

So for one night only, NBA fans, you get to mute Dick Vitale just like the college fans do so often.  Enjoy.
