The Fall of Troy? Not So Fast Because Dillon Baxter Is a USC Trojan

Austin HallJan 19, 2010

Shortly after the Pete Carrol fiasco at USC signaling the fall of Troy, highly touted recruit Dillon Baxter out of San Diego, California opened up his recruiting in a state of confusion.

Oregon, Florida, Michigan, and UCLA fans and coache's eyes lit up and started to open up their mind about the possibilities of having Dillon Baxter on their team.

Baxter is one of those guys who can do it all, there is a question on if he will play quarterback or running back at the next level. Heck, even both.

When Lane Kiffin stepped in as coach of USC, Trojan fans kept their hope of getting the player that has been a USC verbal commit for years. There is no doubt Kiffin is a good recruiter, but the question was, can he bring Dillon Baxter back to USC?

Well, sorry to break the news to you, fans with hope of your team nabbing Baxter. After an Oregon visit this last weekend, Baxter is back to USC.

Apparently the top notch facilities and fast spread offense did not appeal to Baxter at Oregon and possibly the best recruiting class of all time was not good enough to head to Florida.

For Duck fans, this is an obvious letdown. The possibilities of what Chip Kelly could do with Dillon Baxter were endless. It won't be as easy to lure recruits away from USC as originally thought when Pete Carroll left recruits questioning their verbal commitments to USC. Winning the Pac-10 title won't be a cake walk.

It will be interesting to see what happens on signing day. Plenty of big-time recruits considering USC among other Pac-10 schools plan on signing their letter of intents on February 3.

It will be interesting to see what Kiffin does with Baxter, as it seems Baxter would fit best in a spread-type of offense and Lane Kiffin brings more of a pro style attack.

For Trojan fans, this is the spark needed to shed the light on Pete Carroll leaving for the Seattle Seahawks and the coaching hire of Lane Kiffin. Which is not a popular hire at the moment.

Maybe Kiffin will be able to keep USC as a national powerhouse or at least a giant threat in the Pac-10. We have seen he can lure recruits, now let's see what he can do with them.

Like most things in life, only time will tell.
