BYU Football Recruiting 2010: Jake Heaps Headlines a Historic Class
We are only two weeks away from signing day, and barring any last minute surprises, BYU has put together its best recruiting class since...well...maybe ever.
What do traditional recruiting powerhouses, USC, Miami, Florida State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Tennessee all have in common? Their classes (as of Jan 19th, 2010) all rank worse than BYU's according to Scout.com.
The unquestioned jewel of BYU's 14th rankedĀ 2010 recruiting class, Heaps is the No.Ā 1 rankedĀ QB recruit in the entire country, according to Scout.com.
Heaps' accuracy, fundamentals, and leadership abilities are unquestioned. At only 6-2, his size isn't "ideal," but he reminds many of Drew Brees. If that's an apt comparison, then Heaps will likely break all kinds of records at BYU.
Reports seem to indicate that Heaps will forgo serving an LDS mission, and instead try and focus on having a positive impact by a being a positive role model as a football player.
Jake Heaps is the only five star recruit to sign with a Non-AQ team.
Apparently, he has been tearing it up since he was a seventh grader.
Not only did the Cougars nab an elite QB, they also nabbed several other elite recruits.
Heaps had become friends with Ross Apo, a 6-5 receiver with excellent hands, athleticism and route running ability, while attending various recruiting camps.
After getting a scholarship offer from Texas, Apo had verbally committedĀ to the school. But nearly six months ago, he changed his mind, and committed to BYU.
Fortunately for BYU, Apo also decided to bring a few of his teammates with him (video below).
Heaps and Apo is just the tip of the iceburg for this year's recruiting class.
Here's a quick rundown of several other key recruits for BYU.
Zac Stout, the eighth best LB recruit in the country,Ā certainly has theĀ potential toĀ be one of the best linebacker's BYU has ever had.
Bronson Kaufusi, and Kona Schwenke are a duo of talented four star defensive ends, who could also end up playing LB in BYU's 3-4 defensive scheme.
For the record, that's five recruits ranked four stars or better. BYU also managed to nab 17 (yes, 17) three star recruits. Keep in mind, Harvey Unga (BYU's all time leading rusher) who just recently announced his plans to return for a senior season,Ā was a two-star recruit.
If these recruits can live up to their potential, BYU will have the talent to be not just Mountain West champions, but National Champions.
It remains to be seen who among these players will go on missions, and when. Many of these players may not be come key contributors until 2012-2016.
If you put any sort of stock into recruiting rankings, then this is absolutely the most talented recruiting class BYU has ever brought in.
