After Pacquiao Retires, Lopez and Gamboa Can Fill In His Shoes

King JJan 17, 2010

After the inevitable retirement of the sport’s number one pound for pound fighter Manny Pacquiao, one important question faces the boxing world, and that is which boxers would be able to step up and fill in his shoes?

Manny Pacquiao for the the last decade has been winning over the masses from the hardcore boxing fan who never misses any fight to the common casual fan who barely knows how to score a fight properly, and he did it by being exciting, action packed, and thrilling.

Pacquiao is a fighter who gives fans their money’s worth every single time he steps into that ring. So to determine who may possibly bring it with the action and excitement that the Pac Man does after he leaves the sport, we must look for the new younger generation of boxers who too fight in an exciting toe-to-toe crowd pleasing manner.

Thankfully, two possible top candidates for the job are actually both fighting on the same night on the same fight card on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Madison Square Garden in New York on HBO.

Juan Manuel Lopez 27(24)-0 and Yuriorkis Gamboa 16(14)-0 are both young yet proven undefeated exciting power houses who always please the crowds with their exciting fights.

Puerto Rican sensation Juanma Lopez is the WBO super bantam weight champion who has been destroying everything in his way, including his coming out party in 2008 when he knocked out Daniel Ponce De Leon in one round and taking his title.

Lopez is heavy handed with great knock out power having a 88.89 percent KO ratio in his already accomplished career.  The future for Lopez only looks to be getting brighter to the point of shining super star status, as he has been consistently fighting big challenging fights on average four times a year.

Lopez will be fighting Steve Luevano 37(15)-1-1 on January 23rd for the WBO Featherweight title.

Cuban knock out artist Gamboa, just like Lopez, has been stopping anything in his path to greatness as well. With a 87.5 percent KO ratio, Gamboa is also a beast in the ring.

He will be fighting Rogers Mtagwa for the WBA featherweight title, a fighter who many thought Lopez struggled with and narrowly escaped. Gamboa looks to make a big statement by knocking out Mtagwa to show the world who is the better fighter between him and Lopez.

Hopefully this card is an indication of a super fight between Lopez and Gamboa should they both win their fights on the 23rd. After the Pac Man retires, the sport will be in good hands if the younger guys like Lopez and Gamboa continue to fight the way that they do.
