Buckeyes Bounce Back with Evan Turner in the Lineup, Look to Extend Win Streak

Drew GatewoodJan 17, 2010

Ohio State has turned a corner in just one short week, and has revived its season. The Buckeyes have downed No. 6 Purdue and No. 16 Wisconsin this week giving them two quality wins to post on their resume for tournament play.

The return of Evan Turner has become a catalyst for a struggling team, turning them into contenders for not only a Big Ten Championship, but also a decent seeding in the NCAA Tournament in March.

The turn around was even more impressive during the Wisconsin game, with Turner got into foul trouble midway through the second half and played sparingly for the rest of the game. David Lighty stepped up, scoring 18 points which helped Ohio State pull away late in the game.

William Buford continues to be a bright spot as well for the Buckeyes. He had seven points and 12 rebounds against Wisconsin, and 19 points and seven rebounds against Purdue this week.

Ohio State is 4-3 this season against ranked opponents, but more importantly 4-1 with Turner. This is a good stat to remember if Turner stays healthy, considering this team has shown it’s much more competitive with him in the line up. Come tournament time Ohio State will be a tough out for any team they match up against.

ā€œIt’s a good week, we’ve shown our potential, some toughness, and we’ve gotten the job done,ā€ stated Turner after the win over Wisconsin. The confidence is soaring in the Buckeye locker room, and they’ll need it as the schedule doesn’t get any easier for this Buckeye team.

Ohio State (13-5) takes on Northwestern (13-4) for its next game. Both of these teams are coming off wins over Purdue this week and both teams have double digit losses to Wisconsin this year. It will be a very evenly matched game, and one the Buckeyes should come prepared for. Northwestern is no push over this year in Big Ten play, and has proven itself as such.
