Report: Former Buccaneers First-Round Pick Gaines Adams Dead at 26

Oh my...from the "you hope this isn't true" file. Two reports from Greenville, South Carolina say Gaines Adams, 26, has passed away from unknown causes.

Adams was rushed to the emergency room and pronounced dead on Sunday morning.

"Former Clemson University football star Gaines Adams, 26, died this morning after he was taken to the Emergency Room at Self Regional in Greenwood, County Coroner James T. Coursey said.

Adams, a defensive end, was the fourth player chosen in the 2007 National Football League draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was traded from Tampa Bay to the Chicago Bears in October.

An autopsy will be performed today by a forensic pathologist in Anderson County, Coursey said."

Another appeared on the WFFL in Greenville Web site :

"Gaines Adams, the former Clemson star and current defensive end for the Chicago Bears, has died in Greenwood County.

Greenwood County Coroner Jim Coursey said 26-year-old Gaines Adams was taken to the emergency room at Self Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead Sunday morning. Coursey said Adams appeared to be in perfect health. The Greenwood County Sheriff's Office and the Greenwood County Coroner's Office are investigating.

An autopsy will be conducted in Anderson. Adams lived in a home at 104 Dublin Street in Greenwood. He played college football at Clemson University."

If this is Gaines Adams, our prayers are with his family and friends at the tragic time.

UPDATE: A report out of the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting Gaines is believed to have died of a heart attack.
