Michael Vick to St. Louis Rams? | NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings

Sean E. DouglasJan 16, 2010

Rumors have been swirling around in recent days that the St. Louis Rams will make a trade offer for the Philadelphia Eagles' backup quarterback Michael Vick. If the Rams do, in fact, make a play for Vick, he should only help an offense that has struggled mightily for the past three seasons.

Why This Move Would Makes Sense

The Rams have many needs as they are the worst team in football. If they sign Vick then the team can draft Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh instead of drafting a quarterback of the future.

With Vick running the show, it won't make this team ready for the playoffs, but he is a major upgrade from Kyle Boller, Marc Bulger, and others. Finally, this team will have a quarterback that isn't a complete statue in the backfield and can make a play or two with his own abilities.

While Vick is a talented player, he will still need help up front to truly make a long lasting impact on this team.

Offensive Line Needs To Improve

One area for the Rams' offense I expected to produce better in 2009 was their offensive line. Last year, in the offseason, the Rams upgraded at center when they snatched away Ravens budding star lineman Jason Brown.

Then, in the NFL draft, the team selected the top offensive lineman in Jason Smith to be a future staple at tackle.

During the season this offensive line struggled as they moved Alex Barron from right tackle to left tackle. Barron had a horrible season on the left side, as he failed to provide solid protection in the passing game and was one of the highest penalized linemen in all the NFL.

Rookie right tackle Jason Smith only started only a few games this year, as Adam Goldberg was the teams main right tackle.

Guards Jacob Bell (13 games) and Richie Incognito (9 games) weren't too bad but were plagued with injury. Unfortunately, Incognito lost his mind during a Week 14 game against the Titans and was released from the team—played final three games with Bills the very next week.

No matter the offensive weapons this team has, it will be imperative that this offensive line gets its act together to insure success.

Fantasy Football Outlook for 2010

Acquiring Vick and Suh would be a huge deal for this team, but they need to add more pieces to the defense and find a solid right guard in the offseason.

With all the problems this team has to deal with, I believe Steven Jackson would still be a top 10 fantasy running back with the addition of Vick and Suh. Hopefully, they will acquire these players because the Rams need all the help they can get.

At this time, Jackson is the only player that should be on your radar for more than a late round fantasy pick. If the offense starts showing improvement than players like receiver Donnie Avery and kicker Josh Brown could be helpful fantasy options.
