Road to Wrestlemania, Why a Game Should Inspire The Real Thing

Kenneth FinkJan 15, 2010

I picked up Raw vs. Smackdown 2010 on the Wii for my kids this past Christmas. Having my 4 kids going at it with their favorite superstars as well as their own created characters has been a lot fun to watch. I even started playing once they got back in school (the only time I could get a chance)and have really enjoyed the game. I just finished my "created superstar's" Road to Wrestlemania and it really got me thinking that if they can put such a unique storyline into a game why isn't that same logic applied as often in real life.

***Warning!!! I plan on explaining this portion of the video game in my article, so if you haven't played it or finished it, you may want to wait to read this. Not likely I know, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.***

Your road begins ala' Santino Marella as you are called out of the first row ironically by Santino himself and your goal is to beat him one on one and win the Intercontintal Championship. After that Vince all but despise's you and you have numerous matches that are designed to make you lose, such as 2 on 1 matches, an inferno match, Vince will force you to wear a ridiculous outfit and even changes your finishing move after he bans your original, an elimination chamber match dressed as a chicken, and you have to win the Royal Rumble. The entire game path is both challenging and funny, but more than that it's unique.

All the crap Vince tries to throw at you and in the end you will pass up your entitled Wrestlemania title match for a match against Vince himself. And in true form he accepts but changes the rules making a gauntlet match at Wrestlemania and naturally Vince is the last opponent. What's better is that after you win, Vince takes a chair to your head and orders a new match to begin, a first blood match against Vince himself, then after yet another win, he forces another first blood match against your other two previous opponents. Finally after all of that you force Vince to wear a chicken head and do the chicken dance in front of a sold out Wrestlemania..right before you clothesline him to the ground and enjoy the fireworks.

Now I have to admit that had my in game match at Wrestlemania been a real match it would have been amazing, the build up for weeks and the constant twists at the end would make for a great match to see in person.

This leads me to my point (I know it took long enough), we all know Vince has to be involved in Wrestlemania somehow, and he gave us the method when he nutshotted Bret Hart. Now I'm not saying Vince doesn't have something unique in mind as far as a story is concerned, but so far there hasn't been any build up from any angle about any superstar that seems as interesting as what they put into a video game. I'm an adult and the story the game followed kept me interested and kept my kids interested when they went through it too. I bring this up as my kids aren't even 10 years old yet, meaning that they kept their entire target audience intact when they put this game together.

Why aren't they doing the same thing in real life? I appreciate that they are "PG" now, but even kids would have understood if Cena had fired back at an audience chanting "Cena sucks" with something more than "just ignore them". Give me humor with suspense and action, not just one of the three. If the WWE can put together a video game with so many twists and turns to keep it interesting why can't they put that onto a TV so I'll watch every week without using my DVR and then fast forwarding through most of the show.

I understand that this was a single superstar's story, but for fans who are patiently waiting for some up and comers to get their shot, why not all but follow the video game method. Imagine superstars like Shelton Benjamin, MVP, or Evan Borne pushing Vince's buttons constantly and having Vince all but throw everything at them just to see them fight through and earn their title shot and the fans support along the way. Lets face it, everyone loves to hate Vince so why doesn't he personally help push some of these guys to the top by being their stepping stool? Letting more than just DX embarrass him would give the fans someone else to cheer for and allow a superstar their chance to shine. If they didn't have what it takes, they could simply just get their asses handed to them by the boss. Just an idea, what do you think?
