Oilers Can't Finish Dubnyk's 28 Save Performance
Ā Ā While the Olympic Flame burned at centre ice during the pre-game ceremonies the Oilers were in a situation that wasn't that hot.
Ā Ā The day before it was announced Nikolai Khabibulin will have to undergo surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back. On top of that only winning one game out of the last 12.
Ā Ā To say the least the Oilers welcomed the extra boost of confidence provided by the Olympic Flame.

Ā Ā The first period certainly didn't compare to the fiery pre-game. Both teams managed a combined 7 shots on goal the Oilers getting 4 of them.
Ā Ā In the second frame the Oilers continued a 5-3 power-play, Fleury managed to contain the Oilers attack until he gave up a rebound to Andrew Cogliano snapped the puck over the Olympic-bound goalie's outstretched glove.Ā
Ā Ā At the 10 minute mark of the second period it looked like the Oilers were in control as Lubomir Visnovsky one-timed a shot from the point on the power-play.
Ā Ā A couple minutes later Devan Dubnyk was tested for the first time against the defending Stanley Cup champs. After Ladislav Smid was whistled for high-sticking. Dubnyk stopped all three shots fired during the power-play.
Ā Ā Though an almost expected break-down loomed in the distance for the Oilers in the third and final period. First a Tyler Kennedy shot just barely getting past Devan Dubnyk after he caught a piece of it. Though the Oiler lead was still intact.
Ā Ā Though when Ryan Stone took one of the most avoidable hooking calls in hockey, Matt Cooke then scored on that power-play, the Oilers composure began to crumble a situation all too familiar for them.
Ā Ā Four minutes later Mark Staal banked one off of Pascal Dupuis's shinguard to seal the deal for the Penguins. Mark Staal assisted on all 3 Penguins goals and the Oilers would stay silent on the scoreboard for the rest of the game, once again unable to play the way they did in the second period into the third
Ā Ā The Oilers drop to 16-25-5
Ā Ā The second period proved to be much better than the first the shots now increased to 22-17 once again inĀ favorĀ of the Oilers.
