Antrel Rolle Says He Was Misquoted: Memo to New Orleans Saints

Hey, New Orleans Saints, Antrel Rolle doesn’t think that Aaron Rodgers is better than Drew Brees. So please remove any quotes that may have found their way onto bulletin-boards at the Super Dome.

This quote apparently no longer applies:

“Let me tell you something—that dude is scary,” Arizona free safety Antrel Rolle (notes) said of Rodgers. “We have a great defense, and we were up on him and ready to pounce, and he found ways to tear us apart.

“I don’t ever want to face him again in my life. I am dead serious. I’ll face Drew Brees any day of the week before I face him again.”

That quote, included in an article on Sunday by Yahoo Sports’ Michael Silver, caused quite a stir over the last few days with the media and the New Orleans Saints. After practice Wednesday, Rolle took the time to address the words that, according to the Cardinals free safety, never came out of his mouth.

“It’s a complete and total lie,” Rolle told reporters. “First of all, I wasn’t even talking to Michael Silver. Adrian (Wilson) and myself were having a private conversation and I was simply praising Aaron Rodgers.

“(Silver) decided to throw Drew Brees’ name out there and I was like, ‘I’m not even talking about Drew Brees. I’m talking about Aaron Rodgers'. . . . I have all the respect in the world for Drew Brees. His game speaks for itself.”

Got that, New Orleans? He wasn’t even talking about Drew Brees, Michael Silver was. Rolle was just giving a verbal reach around to Rodgers, not a verbal slap to Brees.

If you want to be mad at someone, please join Antrel Rolle in directing your frustration in Silver’s direction.

In Silver’s defense, Rolle did say the Yahoo Sports writer “twisted and turned” his words. If we learned anything from last Sunday’s game, it’s that you can get away with twisting and turning, as long as everyone has shifted their attention to something more important.

I’m sure Yahoo Sports will review the article and conclude that it was “incidental misquoting” and no penalty will be assessed.

So yeah, Saints, if you could replace the quote on the bulletin board with the corrected version, that would be great.

Or don’t. Rolle is ready either way.

“If they want to go out there and use that as motivation, then let it be done,” he said. “I don’t back down from anyone.”
