With The Detroit Lions' It Is Only Words, Just Words.

C DeGetmonJan 12, 2010

Within hours of General Manager, Martin Mayhew, projecting another cowardly barrage of excuses that the Lions’ completed another sub-standard season, Mayhew – in typical Millanesque fashion - was only able to parrot back that the results “were unacceptable.”

That was quickly followed by an endorsement of the entire coaching staff that produced the ‘unacceptable results’ that Mayhew had just condemned moments before.

In the oxymoronic world of the Detroit Lions words are not the currency of the people who run this franchise.

Within minutes of that shocker, the fantasy elite that wastes more time knocking their knees together than they do about thinking, turned their guns and attention to the future. For them, the present is not a place to dwell on. Instead they struggled to make sense of Mayhew’s rambling series of excuses, rationalizations, platitudes, and non-sequiturs by projecting their existential angst into some unrealized future.

One thing the fantasy elite cannot be accused of is being mystified by the brain-trust of the Lions. They speak the same language, much like a machine that spits out sausage links day after day.

Mayhew’s loyal followers – without exception – understood, intuitively and completely what Mayhew was talking about. They rejoiced in the inspiration of what he had said, as well as what he did not say, and what he was incapable of saying. And that is the point.

In the world of Detroit Lion football, meaning is the most meaningless thing of all.

But none of them really understood what Mayhew meant. No one did. Nor will anyone really ever grasp Mayhew’s meaning that day.

After all, that is the point of another meaningless season which traditionally ends in front of the news media. In the redundant universe of the Lions’ -  losing is a way of life. It has been imprinted on the consciousness of a city.

This is a city whose fan base tolerates losing simply because they have become addicted to what the future holds. Presumably, the present – the here and Now – is something to get over with. What would life be without the interminable chatter of player acquisitions and the NFL fantasy draft scenarios in the deadened Universe of the fantasy elite?

There are no lies in Mayhew’s words, nor are they ever interpreted by the fantasy elite in such a light. Utterances that seem untrue are not lies, because the fantasy elite believe them to be true. If Mayhew says one thing, then later forgets what he said, and says the opposite, Mayhew is neither lying nor mistaken because each moment he believes what he said. And in the next moment, he will believe something else; for the fantasy elite, that is all that is required. Whatever Mayhew says will be true.

It is only words; silly inconsequential words.
