Forget Playoffs, to Make The BCS Fair, You Need To Break Up The SEC!

Larry BurtonJan 11, 2010

If fairness for all conferences is really what teams across the country are demanding, playoffs is not the answer. To give everyone a shot at winning a national championship there is only one answer, disband the SEC.

The BCS System has been in place for just 12 years and in that time, the SEC has won six of the coveted crystal balls usually in contests that aren't that close and involve a manhandling of the opponents quarterback and offense.

Alabama closed their playbook after jumping on top of Texas and was content to watch Longhorns try and regain their composure and some offense, to their credit, they did find some while Alabama was playing single coverage defense until finally imploding under the weight of the Alabama defense.

This is the SEC's forth in a row and there appears to be no stopping the conference's talent as a whole. Not with six of the 12 teams ready to produce yet another top 10 national recruiting class to along with the talent pool that is far deeper than any other conference.

So maybe the NCAA should line up conferences alphabetically. That would put Air Force, Arizona, Arizona State, Akron, Arkansas, Army, Auburn, BYU, Ball State, Baylor and Boise State in the same conference with Alabama.

But wait, that wouldn't work out since there's three old SEC teams in that new conference. Darn it and that would have shut Boise State of the BCS busting business once and for all too!

And besides, with F and G being so close together, they'd just wind up playing the conference with Florida and Georgia in it for the championship anyway.

So what about grouping them by mascot families, no that wouldn't work. There aren't enough reptiles to around and where do you fit a Sun Devil in?

There's got to be a way to break up that monopoly the SEC is putting on the BCS system. After all, it's just not fair for one conference to hog all the televisions revenue contracts, all the best endorsement deals and of course locking up so many good bowls.

With four different schools now having won at least one of those crystal balls, something must be done to stop the SEC while any illusion of competition still remains!

Write your congressmen, email the president or set up a grass roots campaign in your own neighborhood to stop the SEC's dominance over college football, or deal with the fact that the other conferences are there for cannon fodder and just move on.
