UConn's Loss to Georgetown is a Cause for Concern

Daniel DinunzioJan 11, 2010

The Huskies blew a 19-point first half lead and lost 72-69 Saturday afternoon in Washington D.C. In a game that was defined by two totally different performances in each half, this loss leaves the Huskies at 11-4 and 2-2 in conference play.

UConn went into the locker room with a 15-point lead. They had dominated inside and out for the first 20 minutes. That all changed in the second half.

Georgetown stepped up its defensive pressure and UConn went missing. The Huskies started to take quick and inefficient shots on offensive which gave the Hoyas more and more opportunities to get back in the game.

UConn's big lead turned into a one point deficit with just over seven minutes remaining.Ā

Stanley Robinson went ice cold after scoring 12 points and pulling down eight rebounds in the first half. Finding him open in and around the hoop was something Calhoun stressed in the post game.

Jerome Dyson who was plagued with foul trouble in the first half, couldn't find his touch, and struggled on both ends of the floor.

Kemba Walker had multiple turnovers and didn't take advantage of the chances he had down the stretch.

UConn continued to shoot poorly from the free throw line, and once again could have been a different outcome if the Huskies made their freebies.

The one player that UConn had no answer for was Austin Freeman. Coming into the game, his career high was 21 points.

He scored 28 of his 33 in the second half, and knocked down almost every shot that was in his sight.

Whether it was putting down an electrifying dunk or nailing a three from the corner, no one could stop or defend him on the court.

This Huskies team did battle down the stretch. UConn still had chances to pull out the win down the wire but it didn't convert when it needed to the most.

The last sequence was typical of how UConn has performed in close games down the stretch so far this season.

Dyson missed a runner, then a kick-out three to a wide open Walker went off the front of the rim. Two golden opportunities that UConn could have taken the lead in the closing seconds.

Even down by one when they tried to follow and Georgetown slammed a dunk home, Stanley Robinson missed a fade away three as the buzzer went off.

It left the entire UConn bench stunned and in disbelief.

A team that has four players who made significant contributions in last years run to the Final Four.

It's clear that this Huskies team misses the low post presence of Jeff Adrien and Hasheem Thabeet.

Alex Oriahki lacks the consistent offensive production underneath the basketball. Charles Okwandu and Atar Majok continue to try and fight for minutes on the floor, because right now neither of them are doing much to help the team.

Kemba Walker to the same extent needs to be the leader and floor general as point guard of this team.

The leadership that A.J. Price had established is something that Walker needs to play with.

He has on far too many occasions driven to the basket out of control, missed free throws, and open jumpers.

This team is going to have to come together and solve the issues they have if they want to compete in the Big East.

No game is a gimme, and this UConn team could be on the outside looking in if they don't straighten up.

This team has a lot of talent, but what's its use if it's put on display during the big games and on the center stage.
