Texas Tech Tries To Right The Ship: Tommy Tuberville Named Head Coach
Lubbock, Tex — With Mike Leach ousted as Capitan of the Red Raider pirate ship, the Administration hired an accomplished field general to take over the helm. Texas Tech announced today that Tommy Tuberville will be the next Head Football Coach, but is he the right man for the job?
The Red Raiders are a constant underdog in the Big 12. The team does not have the respect that Texas or Oklahoma enjoy, and selling the town of Lubbock to a blue chip recruit must be akin to selling ice to Eskimos. In short, Texas Tech is not Auburn.
Tuberville won 110 of his 160 games as head coach, dominated his is in-state rival (Alabama) with a record of 7-3, won five Conference Division Titles (SEC west), and one SEC Conference Championship (2004). In 2004 he turned in a perfect season of 13-0, but he averages a three or four loss season, and that gets you nowhere in the Big 12 South.
With Texas and Oklahoma routinely showing up to the Big 12 championship with less than two losses, Tuberville must coach the Red Raiders to near perfection to have a chance of playing in the Conference Championship.
Tuberville is replacing Mike Leach, a fan favorite, and a media favorite. He was the winning-est coach in the history of the program, and secured bowl berths in all of his ten seasons.
He turned a ground and pound offence into a prolific passing powerhouse. Under Leach, the Red Raiders never turned in a losing season. Tuberville resigned his head coaching position after turning in a 5-7 season in 2008.
Tuberville will not only have to win on the football field, but he will also have to win back the fans that turned their backs on the program following the questionable decision to fire Leach, and after the administration choose him over current Defensive Coordinator Ruffin McNeill.
Let’s face it, if Tuberville make any changes to Leach's offense, and doesn't bring home a National Championship in his first season, he will be boo'ed worse than Adam James and Taylor Potts. Good luck Coach.
