Landon Donovan Gets an Assist in 69 Minutes As Everton Draw With Arsenal 2-2
In the first Premier League match for both Arsenal and Everton in 2010, the two sides met at the Emirates Stadium in London in one of the two Premier League matches moved to January 9 due to the terrible recent weather conditions in England.
Going into the match, Everton decided to start American international Landon Donovan in his first ever match for the side along with Louis Saha, who has been fit enough to rejoin the Toffees.
For Arsenal, they were still without Cesc Fabregas and Nicklas Bendtner, but both should return for the match against Bolton next weekend.
As the match begun, the snow started to fall onto the turf at the Emirates, and Eveton came out of the gate hard and were attacking the Arsenal net. They were rewarded with their hard work in the 12th minute when Donovan's corner found the head of Leon Osman and gave Everton an early 1-0 lead.
Afterwards, Everton dropped men back into their midfield, and Arsenal were able to exploit that mistake in the 28th minute as Denilson was able to score on a deflection by Osman and past keeper Tim Howard to tie the match at one.
As the first half ended, the score was 1-1. But it was apparent that Everton expected a win, and had put together one of their best halves of the season to date.
In the beginning of the second half, Everton and Arsenal continued to exchange chances, but each side's respective defense was incredible and was able to stop anything from going into their own net.
Donovan's night was over in the 69th minute, as he put together a solid effort in his first ever Premier League match and came away with an assist, giving Everton a chance to win.
And Everton appeared to be on their way to victory as Steven Pienaar got a breakaway off a pass from Tim Cahill, and was able to chip the ball over Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia to give Everton a 2-1 lead with just eight minutes of regulation to go.
At the restart, James Vaughan nearly won the match for the Mereysiders with a great shot that Almunia was able to save and Arsenal started to crowd into the Everton end.
But in the second minute of stoppage time, Tomas Rosicky was able to secure a draw for Arsenal with a shot that deflected off of Lucas Neill to give both sides a 2-2 draw.
With the draw, neither side moves up any spots in the League Table, and in their next match, Everton will host Manchester City at Goodison Park while Arsenal will travel to the Reebok Stadium to take on Bolton.
