Standing On The Rock: Why Colt McCoy Wasn't Devastated

Matthew PerryJan 8, 2010

After the BCS Title Game last night, the Crimson Tide celebrated their first national championship since 1992.  They earned it, and gave us another reason to see the SEC's superiority over every other conference in the nation.

Pundits will speculate as to whether the outcome would have been different if University of Texas' QB Colt McCoy would have played.  His early injury put freshman QB Garrett Gilbert at the helm.  McCoy's absence may have cost Texas a legitimate shot at winning the game (though I personally question that), and may have made his draft status in the upcoming NFL draft in April to plummet.

Yet, in a post-game interview , Colt McCoy demonstrated humility and class, giving due not only to the Crimson Tide team, but he showed his center:  "I always give God the glory.  I never question why things happen the way they do.  God is in control of my life, and I know that if nothing else, I'm standing on the Rock."

Regardless of where you fall in your religious/spiritual beliefs, it is good to see a humble young man who is the leader of a top-flight NCAA football team be so humble in defeat.  His kudos to Gilbert and to Alabama were class.  Yet, his boldness in giving God "the glory" (without being in-your-face about it) demonstrated how he could stay 'classy' in such a circumstance.

Whatever your convictions may be (and I happen to share McCoy's, by the way), state them clearly and don't be ashamed.  I always find that having discussions on what fuels individuals always to be discussions worth having.

Who knows what we might learn from each other?
