The Pursuit Of Perfection: Who Ya Got?
Texas vs Alabama, Saban vs Brown, McCoy vs Ingram, and the age long question: offense vs defense.
Quarterback: Colt McCoy vs Greg McElroy. Colt McCoy was a Heisman trophy candidate for the whole year and I had to look up how to spell McElroy.
Edge: Texas
Runningback: Tre' Newton/Cody Johnson/Vondrell McGee/Fosswhitt Whittaker (I swear this guy is an actor) vs Mark Ingram. Mark Ingram won the Heisman trophy and if that isn't enough for you I will tell you that McCoy is leading the Horns in rushing attempts. McCoy is a good quarterback but not even Woody Paige could argue he is a better running back than Ingram.
Edge: Alabama
Wide Receivers: Jordan Shipley etc. vs Julio Jones etc. If you simply look at the stats its not even close, Texas all the way. Alabama is going to run the ball and then make you pay with their speed guys on the outside.
Edge: Tie
Tie Breaker: Tight End: Greg Smith (Texas) vs Colin Peek (Alabama). I know Texas runs the spread but Peek has 20 more receptions, 250 more yards, and 3 more touchdowns.
Edge: Alabama
Offensive Line: I'm not going to pretend like I know a lot about the offensive lines of each team so we'll just call this one a tie.
Edge: Tie
Defensive Line: Two Words: Terrence Cody. He's not a flashy DT like Ndamukong Suh but he is big enough and strong enough to occupy all 5 Texas offensive linemen. Expect to see him going early in the draft to a 3-4 style defense.
Edge: Alabama
Linebackers: Rolando McClain of Alabama and Roddrick Muckelroy of Texas are both highly touted NFL prospects but the speed of SEC will reign supreme in this match up.
Edge: Alabama
Defensive Backs: The only name I recognized in the Alabama secondary was Javier Arenas and that's is only because of his kick returning. Texas' secondary on the other hand has been getting thrown on 80 times a game by those Big 12 offenses so they have to be good (after all that practice) right?
Edge: Texas
Special Forces: Javier Arenas and Jordan Shipley are game changers. The game could come down to a big punt or kick return but ultimately it will be the kicking game. Texas is 22-25 on FGs on the year with a 39.2 average when punting the ball. Alabama is 29-34 on FGs on the year with a 42.0 average when punting.
Edge: Tie
Coaching: Mack Brown vs Nick Saban. Saban is 123-50-1 with 1 national championship. Brown is 213-100-1 with 1 national championship. Above all, Saban is a rat while Brown is a class act.
Edge: Texas
Speed kills and defense > offense
ROLL TIDE
Prediction: Alabama 26 Texas 17
