Why Play Thursday? We Already Have Our College National Champions

Thursday night the Texas Longhorns will battle the Alabama Crimson Tide and the winner will be crowned National Champions. While the game may be entertaining to watch and these two teams are very deserving of a shot at the National Championship the truth is it was already won, or at least a portion of it.

Early this week the Boise St Broncos defeated the TCU Horned Frogs and with that win they should have assured themselves a share of the National Title. They finished the season undefeated and the defeated two teams that will be in the top 20 in the rankings by the end of the season. When they defeated TCU they beat the fourth best team in the country. Regardless if what teams wins Thursday night Boise should get a share but they will be rooting for Texas.

If Texas wins the big game it would be easier to make a case for Boise since Texas played a weaker schedule than Alabama. If Alabama wins then it would be harder for them to make a case but they would be one of only two true undefeated teams. It doesn’t matter what team does win the Boise St Broncos have set themselves up for a run at the National Championship next year and perhaps for years to come.

 When the dust settles and the final rankings come out Boise stands to be ranked in the top five. If this happens there is a very good chance that they will be in the top five when the 2010 season kicks off. The schedule next year demands much more respect and Boise St may finally be able to put that schedule bias behind them. Next year they face Fresno St, Oregon St, Nevada, and travel to play Virginia Tech. If they start the season ranked in the top five and manage to go undefeated there is no way the powers that be can keep them out of the true championship game.

 Until that day comes when Boise St goes to the big game we should give them respect now and by respect I mean a piece of the National Championship.
