One of the great things about Tennessee Volunteer fans is that we are very knowledgeable and opinionated when it comes to our sports teams. This is especially true when it comes to football.
With 69 days left until the UCLA game, football is on everyone's mind on Rocky Top.
It has been done on some of the other team pages here on BR, and I want to get a message board going on the Tennessee page as well. I know we all have opinions about our beloved Volunteers.
Every week, I will post a question and my view on the subject, but then I want everyone to comment or write their own article on the topic. Here is this week's topic:
After David Cutcliffe left Big Orange Country to become the new Head Coach at Duke, Phillip Fulmer did something that had not been done at Tennessee in more than 25 years. He went outside the Vols family to hire Dave Clawson as offensive coordinator.
Clawson, the head coach at I-AA Richmond for the past four years, has excited many Vols fans who felt the offense had become stale and conservative. This was the perception, even though the Volunteers averaged 32.5 points last season and threw more than 500 passes.
Clawson likes to spread the field, run multiple formations, use lots of motion and shifts, and have a physical running game.
What I want to know from everyone is: What do you think the impact will be with the new offensive system?
I think that the hire of Clawson has been a breath of fresh air on Rocky Top. Bringing in someone from outside the family is a good move, instead of just hiring from in house (Randy Sanders).
From what I have observed at the Spring Game, I thought the players enjoyed the new system, even though they were still ironing out a few rough patches.
I like the idea of keeping the physical running game, because it fits Arian Forster's running style. He is good catching the ball out of the backfield as well, which is a must when you spread the field.

I think the Clawson hire is solid. If Peyton came back to coach it would be off the charts, but Clawson seems to have a sound football philosophy. More importantly, he seems to be a stand-up guy with character.
