Texas Exes: Longhorns in the League

Barking CarnivalJan 3, 2010

Holy cow, the hits just keep on coming for former Texas Longhorns in the NFL.

Jamaal Charles , who barely saw the field in the first half of this season, shattered the Kansas City Chiefs’ single-game rushing record today, running up 259 yards on the day, putting him over 1,100 yards for the season.

Chiefs’ LB Derrick Johnson ran back two interceptions for touchdowns in the team’s upset of the Broncos, and flashed the Hook ‘em sign after the second.

Ricky Williams was held well in check by the Steelers’ defense, totaling only 31 yards rushing on 12 carries, and finishes his Comeback Player of the Year (in my opinion) season with 1,121 yards rushing.

Roy Williams was a complete non-factor in the Cowboys’ 24-0 shutout of the Eagles, as he now appears to have lost the confidence not just of his fellow players, but the coaching staff as well.

David Thomas did not have a catch in the Saints’ loss today. I’m not sure he even saw the field, given that the Saints sat out most of their starters in this contest.

Leonard Davis had an absolutely devastating first half run blocking for Marion Barber and Felix Jones, as the Cowboys ripped off 179 yards rushing on the Eagles’ defense.

Vince Young had an okay day throwing the ball in the Titans’ season-ending win over Seattle, giving Tennessee a break-even year at 8-8 after the team got off to an 0-6 start.

Bo Scaife caught two balls for 14 yards.

Michael Griffin led the team in tackles and recorded a sack.

Brian Orakpo had two tackles but no sacks in today’s Redskins game against the Chargers, and finishes the season with 11 sacks and a spot in the Pro Bowl.

Cedric Benson and the Bengals play tonight against the Jets.  In a gross miscarriage of justice, Cedric did not make the League’s All-Star game.

Some other notes of interest:

The Houston Texans defeated the Patriots to record the first winning season in franchise history at 9-7. If the Bengals beat the Jets in the Sunday night game, the freaking TEXANS will be a playoff team.

Hell of a deal.

The Cowboys recorded the first back-to-back shutouts in the franchise’s 40-year history.  Last week’s shutout of a horrible Redskins’ offense was no big deal (although the Skins did manage to mount a respectable effort today against the Chargers), but shutting out the Eagles is pretty impressive.

Of course, they get to try to repeat the effort next week, as the NFL playoff system dictates the Eagles come right back to Arlington to play the Cowboys again in the first round of the playoffs.

Hooboy.
