Beyond the 2010 Fiesta Bowl: Boise State Broncos Look to Win a BCS Title

Lace BanachekJan 2, 2010

This third and final article of a three-part story elaborates on Boise State’s existing football team which includes their redshirt unit that will help take the current No. 6, BCS ranked Broncos, to even a greater ranking and a potential BCS championship.

The undefeated Boise State Broncos, a little less than two days away from playing in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl were granted the right because of how well they have done this year.

Boise State, although wounded, has been preparing well for their second BCS appearance in Arizona’s Fiesta Bowl scheduled for this Monday. Two valuable wide receivers for Boise State, Tyler Shoemaker and Austin Pettis, are reportedly playing.

Pettis most likely will line up once the Broncos near the red zone. The starting wide-outs should be Titus Young, Shoemaker, and true freshman Kirby Moore, Kellen’s younger brother who set the high-school record (nationally) for touchdowns.

Pettis, Mitch Burroughs, and Chris Potter along with tightends Kyle Efaw and Tommy Gallarda will add to the Bronco passing game.

Kellen Moore, the nation's most efficient passer and ranked second in touchdowns with 39 will look to add to his stats this season as he completes his sophomore year in Arizona.

Next season, barring unforeseen circumstances, the wide receiver unit will bring back healthy previously mentioned stars and will add from the 2009 redshirt squad a batch of super multi-talented individuals.

Aaron Burks, Geraldo Hiwat (a pair of 6’3 speedsters) will give the receiving corps more speed then it has most likely ever seen.

Another 6’3 pair, Trevor Peterson and Gabe Linehan, will shore up an already marvelous corp of tight end receivers who can block, but don’t be surprised to see Linehan lineup at receiver and take a direct snaps from time to time because he is extremely talented.

Also, this season Michael Coughlin was Moore’s back up quarterback, but it would seem more than likely for Joe Southwick to earn that spot next season. If that is so, the Broncos will be a punishing team more than able to score from the depths of their roster.

The running backs will be so deep that explosive Doug Martin will most likely return to playing special teams and the defensive secondary nickel position.

Dan Paul, Matt Kaiserman, and all Oregon Malcolm Johnson will aid Jeremy Avery and DJ Harper in the backfield.

Johnson may surprise many as he sets new rushing standards at Boise State. Kaiserman is a hard runner; very physical as well is Dan Paul (the former linebacker). The whole team is going to be deep, not in bodies, but talent.

The second and third string should not be a major difference in quality players. Redshirt freshman Southwick will offer significant power to the passing game allowing Moore to take a breather when needed.

The defensive unit will be bigger, tougher, faster and greatly more experienced than it was this “09” season.  But it will be deeper due to the 20 players coming off redshirt. With that said the Broncos are only losing five players and have verbal commits from six new players.

Due to scholarship limitations somebody is going to have to greyshirt or transfer. If the Broncos lose the Fiesta Bowl they will still be expected to be a better team next season than they were this year.

Whether the Broncos win a second BCS Bowl game, they will be expected to challenge for the BCS top two spots (championship game) next year.

There will be very good teams next season, but none better than Boise State and that’s another story. Go Broncos!
