Arsenal January Transfer Prospects: Which Striker Should Wenger Target?

Callum D'SouzaJan 2, 2010

After Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner both fell to injuries, the Arsenal frontline lacked serious power and height. With van Persie now absent till at least April and Nicklas Bendtner still just under a month away, Arsene Wenger has insisted he will buy a striker.

Now that Janaury has arrived, the Frenchman needs to begin his shopping. With Eduardo Da Silva and Carlos Vela the two fit strikers at the moment and Andrei Arshavin playing as a make shift center forward, a strong, powerful striker would suit the Gunners nicely.

So who should Arsene Wenger target?

1.Craig Bellamy-Manchester City- £10-15 million

The Aggressive Welshman may find himself out of favour at Manchester City, if they continue their huge spending spree. With Arsene Wenger all ready admitting he is interested in the 30 year old and the Welsh frontman annoyed with the sacking of Mark Hughes, a deal could go through.

Bellamy is a strong and powerful defender who does a lack a bit of height. Bellamy has been in relatively good form this season, scoring six times. The former Liverpool striker may be a tad expensive and he does lack the youth most of the Arsenal stars boast, but he could prove a strong buy.

2.Klaas-Jan Huntelaar-AC Milan-On loan

Since moving from the Bernabeu to the San Siro, Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has struggled for form, and with the Dutch international eager to make Hollands World Cup Squad, Huntelaar is keen for a move away.

Rumour had it that Wenger may seek a loan deal with Milan which would bring the 26 year old to the Emirates for the remainder of the season. The former Real Madrid striker is imposing, powerful and tall. Over 6ft the Dutchman is a huge threat in the air.

Huntelaar is also quick and blessed with a fierce finish. When inform the Milan striker can be a deadly striker.

3.Ruud van Nistelrooy-Real Madrid-£10-15 million or a 6 month loan deal

Strong, imposing and a superb finsher-Ruud van Nistelrooy is not a bad short term option. With the Dutch forward out of favour at the Bernabeu, Van Nistelrooy is seeking a move elsewhere.

Although Wenger isn't to keen on the Dutchman. It could be a wise loan move. At 33 the former United striker does not boast age but height and power is still on his agenda. The Madrid frontman would offer great aieral threat and would fit into the 4-3-3 formation nicely.

4. Benni McCarthy-Blackburn Rovers-3-6 million or a 6 month loan deal.

It may seem like an odd suggestion but with Benni McCarthy desperate to depart Blackburn a loan deal could prove stong for the Gunners. The South African is similar to the latter and could become a strong threat off the bench or as the lone striker.

5. Roman Pavlyuchenko-Tottenham-£10-14 million

The Russian forward is up for sale claims Spurs boss Harry Redknapp. Pavlyuchenko has struggled to find a place in the Tottenham side and with the 6ft2 eager to depart it would not hurt for Wenger to check out the big Russian.

The Russian is tall and imposing can offer good strength up front and the ability to hold up defenders. Next to Eduardo you can see the pair thriving together.

6.Carlton Cole-West Ham-£8-13 million

The talented Englishman has been in good form for the Hammers for a while now and it is attracting attention. Cole stand tall at 6ft3 and with his lethal finishing and good pace, the 26 year old is a hazard to defenders.

Wenger should aim for the former Chelsea striker. He would give tremendous height and power.

7.Kevin Kurányi -Shalke 04-£8-13 million

Another imposing striker who can offer great finishing and aerial threat for the Gunners. Rumour has it the German is eager for a move to the Premier League.

If Wenger digs deep he may be able to land the 27 year old.

8.Emile Heskey-Aston Villa-£6-11 million or 6 month loan deal

The veteran striker is very keen to make the England World Cup Squad and with a short term deal with Arsenal, things could transpire.

Heskey is expereinced and very powerful with a strong header. Although it's unlikely it wouldn't hurt to offer.

9.Edin Džeko-VfL Wolfsburg- £17-30 million

Young, talented, powerful and a born goalscorer. Just what Arsenal need. Edin is a terrifc player who is being sought after by numerous European giants. The Bosnian is a perfect fit for the Arsenal style and at 23 has a huge future ahead of him.

Sadly, he could be just out of the price range for Wenger.
