Superman's Curtain Call: Tim Tebow Says Farewell to Gator Nation

Adam BiggersJan 1, 2010

Tim Tebow will forever be remembered as one of the greatest college football players to ever suit up. Tebow has already cemented his legendary legacy as a Florida Gator with his National Championships in 2006 and 2008, and has a laundry list of accolades to compliment his stellar career.

The 2010 All State Sugar Bowl would be the last time Tebow would  strap on his Gator-orange helmet.

In true Superman fashion, Tebow and the Gators torched Cincinnati, 51-24.

In an era where players' every moves are scrutinized, written about and televised, Tebow's crystal clear image has never been tarnished.

Tebow's never been photographed taking bong hits, never fell asleep drunk behind the wheel at a traffic light, nor has he put on a black ski mask to beat frat boys senseless — no drug possessions, sex scandals or steroids. And for those very reasons, there are people who can't stand him and his "Boy Scout" persona.

Love 'em or hate 'em, Tebow has played the game with style, consistency, class and pride — he's been the model of what a college athlete should be.

Tebow won the Heisman Trophy in 2007, was The Sporting News' and AP's Player of the Year in 2007, and is a two-time Maxwell Award Winner (2007,2008).

Superman took home the Davey O'Brien Award in 2007, SEC Athlete of the Year in 2007 and was voted the SEC Offensive player of the year twice (2007,2009). 2009's William V. Campbell Trophy, "academic Heisman," went to Tebow as well.

Tebow's list of accomplishments are second to none, he's one of the most decorated players in the history of college athletics.

Tebow is the SEC's leader in rushing touchdowns, breaking Herschel Walker's (Georgia) previous record of 51, with 56. To add the icing on the cake, Tebow broke Walker's record against the Bulldogs. How's that sound for a storied career?

8,457 passing yards with 84 touchdowns over his career speaks volumes. Tebow's 66% career completion rate is almost unheard of in today's game.

Tebow rushed for over 2,800 yards on 663 attempts during his time in Gainesville.

Superman would take on the Bearcats of Cincinnati in the 2010 All State Sugar Bowl, a game that Gator fans were quite emotional over. Subsequently, Friday's Sugar Bowl might just have been coach Urban Meyer's final game on the Gator side-line.

Unfortunately for Cincinnati, their stylish all white uniforms did nothing for their performance.

The Gators jumped out to a quick lead over the Bearcats, dominating on both sides of the ball. Florida's defense was suffocating — draping over the 'Cats like the swamp water that covers the Sunshine State's landscape.

Florida jumped out to a 30-3 lead in a very chippy (to say the least) first half, with Tebow leading the way in vintage-Superman-style. Tebow passed for 321 yards, completed 21/23 of his attempts, and threw for three touchdowns.

Judging by the first 30 minutes, Cincinnati looked like they were no match for Florida.

The second half was more of the same for Florida (and Cincinnati) — Tebow and Riley Cooper continued to put on a dazzling aerial show in one of Tebow's best games of his career.

The record for most all purpose yards in a BCS game, once held by former Texas quarterback, Vince Young, was shattered by Tebow Friday night.

Tebow racked up 482 total yards passing, threw for three touchdowns — rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown, completing 31 of 35 passes attempted (533 all purpose yards, four touchdowns).

There is no better way imaginable for Superman to hang up his cape. He dismantled and embarrassed the Bearcats on a national stage, set BCS records, and peformed as close to perfect as humanly possible — then again, Superman is known for super-human feats.
