Tim Tebow: The Media Created Monster and How It Ruined College Football

Aaron WadeJan 1, 2010

With the college football season winding down, many players will be leaving to go to the NFL.Ā  Some players will be leaving early but, one particular player is leaving and it will only make the next year better: Tim Tebow.

Tim Tebow is the most overrated player in the college football draft this season, and perhaps in quite some time.Ā  However, that didn’t stop the media from latching onto him.Ā  While he doesn’t have the skill set to be a NFL quarterback, for what he does off the field, the media decided that he was worth talking about nonstop.Ā  He is all the media will talk about.Ā

Take for example, when he was knocked out of a few games with a concussion.Ā  One analyst wrote that because Tebow wasn’t going to play ā€œthe college season is over.ā€Ā  That is just an example of how the media has fallen in love with Tebow, and it is bad for college football as a whole.

Tebow dominates the headlines of every show or segment, even when he a sub-par performance.Ā  This season, Freddie Barnes set a NCAA record for receptions in a season, but he went largely unnoticed.Ā  However, Tebow broke the SEC rushing touchdown record, a far less prestigious feat and got non-stop coverage, including a countdown in every highlight.Ā

In addition, Tebow was in the running for the Heisman trophy from the beginning, even though he had stats that were sub-par.Ā  But, there were other players who had better stats and didn’t miss any games, yet they were not invited to New York City for the presentation.Ā

Furthermore, Tebow coverage takes media coverage and slants it to Florida.Ā  For example, during half time of the Sugar Bowl, rather than talking about what the University Of Cincinnati had to do to get back into the game, they decided the game was over because, Tebow had a good game already so, it was clearly over.Ā

One of the biggest faults with the media’s love affair with Tebow is that it makes everybody who plays against him bad.Ā  The media will hype him up so much, that no other players will be able to live up to his ridiculous hype, and thus look like they are playing poorly.

Tim Tebow is put on this pedestal that no one will ever achieve again.Ā  However, he does not deserve to be put there. Ā He does not play in a ā€œpro-styleā€ offense, and the team that drafts him, is going to have to teach him that.Ā  Because of that, he is going to have a huge disadvantage going into the NFL.Ā

The simple fact is, he is going from style of play to a whole different realm of football that he just isn’t prepared for.Ā  He is going to struggle in his NFL career, and it will be interesting to see if the media decides to keep him up on his pedestal, or tear it down and crucify him and turn their back on the monster they created.
