This Just In: Mark Richt Will Remain the Head Coach at Georgia
In what can only be described as a shocking development, the University of Georgia has decided to retain Mark Richt as their head football coach.
Coach Richt could not be reached for comment this morning, but it is believed that he had already cleared out his office. In a related story, Coach Richt has removed his name from the list of candidates interested in the head coaching job at Little Rock Community College.
The Dawg nation sits in stunned silence today. Most Dawg fans anticipated Richt's removal after the travesty of an 8-5 season. Many of the Athens faithful cited a need to return to the glory days of Georgia football.
Tommy from Loganville stated, "It's time the Dawgs bring in someone like Ray Goff or Jim Donnan to take this program to the next level."
Tommy went on to say, "I know Coach Richt is a good man and all, but 90 wins in nine years just doesn't cut it. Coach Richt is too soft, too calm. Where are the stress related health issues? How come he's not gettin' suspended for verbally abusing his players, and locking them in a broom closet? He's just not man enough for this program."
So Dawgs fans, how do you feel about the announcement?
Would you rather have Lane Kiffin (or Lance, as Al Davis called him)? All that fire and bravado to go with his 12-20 career coaching record. If he came to Georgia, would he bring Daddy with him?
Do we want to return to the days of Goff (46-34-1) or Donnan (40-19)?
Of course no such announcement was made.
But for some reason, I felt it necessary to state the obvious. It's amazing what a few fans from other SEC schools (ones that are suddenly relevant again, after a decade of mediocrity) can stir up on b/r.
This season was certainly not what we wanted and last season left a lot to be desired. Coach Richt put a lot of faith in Willie Martinez, and he gave him plenty of rope to do his thing. But Martinez failed, and loyalty can only last for so long in college football.
So now Coach Richt looks to bring in someone new. A defensive coordinator who will bring fire back to the defensive side of the ball. I have no doubt that he will make the right decision.
Coach Richt still has much to do at Georgia. But it's time we give this man the credit he deserves.
The numbers speak much louder than "Tommy."
Coach Richt has not had a losing season at Georgia. He has won 10 or more games in six of his nine years. He has led the Dawgs to four SEC east crowns, and two SEC championships (and played for a third).
He is 7-2 in bowl games, and 2-1 in BCS bowls.
Georgia has five top 10 finishes, and two top five finishes under Richt.
Georgia has won more games in this decade than Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee. Only Florida and LSU have won more.
So despite what Bama fans think, and despite what Florida fans think...and yes, despite what Tommy from Loganville thinks, Mark Richt is still the man for Georgia.
It's time for Georgia fans and college football fans in general to come back to reality.
Yes, we all love to win and we all hate to lose. But the reality is this...you can't always win the big game. Sometimes eight wins is what you get.
When you play in the SEC you have to play perfect every week, or at least pretty darn close. When you don't, you get your butt kicked.
It happens to Les Miles. It happens to Urban Meyer. It happens to Nick Saban.
Most Georgia fans are thankful that we have such a great head coach. There will be no "packing his bags" for Coach Richt (unless he takes a vacation, or a "leave of absence").
To "Tommy" in Loganville and all those who don't appreciate what we have, I say, be careful what you wish for. I hear that Ray Goff is looking for a job.
