From 2002-2008, Navy sold a total of 151,000 tickets for their seven consecutive bowl appearances. The Midshipmen never lost money on any of these trips. In comparison, the Big Ten was required to buy 10,500 tickets for the Minnesota Golden Gophers loss to Kansas in 2008. The Gophers were only able to sell 1,512 of the tickets, resulting in a loss of $434,340.

This week the Golden Gophers band flew to Arizona, while Iowa State's band took a bus. Both teams have budgeted over a million dollars in travel expenses.

Minnesota hasn't reached last year's sales total yet. Iowa State has sold about 8,000 tickets for the game. The Gophers face the Cyclones in the New Years Eve Insight Bowl.

Former Gophers offensive coordinator Mike Dunbar, interviewed for the offensive coordinator position at New Mexico State. Dunbar is regarded as the most experienced candidate for the position.

Gophers punter Blake Haudan credits former Minnesota Viking Mitch Berger with helping him improve his technique.

Jan. 3 is Ben Berhow and Albert Lea community wrestling day, when the Gophers wrestle Iowa State at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis.  Berhow (junior) is a Gophers heavyweight from Hayward, Minnesota. Dec. 15, Berhow was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week.

Minnesota Vikings

Former Vikings TE Matt Cercone died Nov. 27, at the age of 33 in Phoenix, Arizona.  The cause has been reported as undisclosed.

Former Viking cornerback Marcus McCauley, was cut by the Saints on Dec. 22. He also had stints with Detroit and Tampa Bay this year. He played one game for the Lions.

Minnesota Twins

Former Twin (and my all-time favorite closer) Eddie Guardado 39, signed a non-guaranteed one year contract with the Washington Nationals. He is not on the 40 man roster. Guardado will be given an opportunity to make the team in spring training.

Rumors have the Minnesota Twins pursuing a trade for Cleveland Indians 3B Jhonny Peralta.
