This year’s Gator Bowl matchup for Friday, Jan. 1 features the 9-3 West Virginia Mountaineers and the 6-6 Florida State Seminoles. The big story in this one is the final game of Bobby Bowden.

During his storied career at Florida State, Bowden has assured himself a place as one of the best college coaches of all time. The potential of hosting Bobby Bowden’s final game drew the Gator Bowl to invite Florida State over several other better teams.

Apparently, the ploy worked as the game sold out in a mere two hours.

Besides the allure of Bowden’s final game, what should we expect from the actual football side of things? Here are a few things to watch out for as far as free Gator Bowl Picks go between West Virginia vs. Florida State.

For Florida State’s offense, things do not look as good as they did early in the season.

Quarterback Christian Ponder went down with a shoulder injury and Coach Bowden handed the reins to sophomore quarterback E.J. Manuel.

Manuel is very talented and a dual threat, but he has not exactly protected the ball for Florida State. He threw six picks versus just two touchdowns for the Seminoles. Whether or not he can keep from turning the ball over will be a major factor in this game.

For West Virginia, they come to the table with a very talented team. Noel Devine was a very promising recruit coming in and he has not disappointed. He has ran for over 1200 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season.

Quarterback Jarrett Brown has had a decent year stepping into Pat White’s role in the offense, completing over 63 percent of his passes. They should have no trouble moving the ball on the Seminoles defense. They have not exactly played inspiring defense this year and this game should be no different.

Unless Bowden can rally the troops for one last battle, expect the Mountaineers to be the better team in this one. The oddsmakers currently have West Virginia favored by just 2.5 points against the Seminoles and the posted total is sitting at 60 points.
