The Ignorance Of Kirk Bohls and Other "Reporters" Against Notre Dame

Today, as I do everyday, I did a search in Google news for anything to do with Notre Dame Football.  I was "lucky" to find a dishrag article by Ken Bohls who writes for the Austin Statesman and covers all things University of Texas Football.

In his gem he writes:

"Glad I don’t hold any NBC stock. I’d be dumping it for sure after the network’s announcement that it has renewed its television contract with Notre Dame through the 2015 season."

What this makes clear is Ken should stick to being a fan and not venture into the big big world of the stock market.  Notre Dame, no matter what you think of the team, school or product on the field, is THE premiere program in College Football when it comes to the money.

He then goes on to write:

"No word on who’s going to be watching. Not many were last year when the Fading Irish went 3-9 and drew an average 1.9 rating and a five share. I’m surprised it was that high. Guess bowling got pre-empted."

Here is a simple answer Mr. Bohls, the MILLIONS of Notre Dame fans in every corner of the nation.  I would really love the clarification of what "not many" means to Ken.  A 1.9 rating on a National level is in the MILLIONS.  While this schedule included USC and Boston College, they also were against the likes of Georgia Tech, Michigan State, Navy, Air Force and Duke.  Hardly teams with large followings outside of the local market and alumni.  So facing this schedule Notre Dame grabbed a 1.9 market share week in and week out going against the "Game of the Week" for the Big 11, Big 12, SEC and Pac 10.  When you look at it that way instead of the eyes of a puppet for the University of Texas football program one can see how remarkable a 1.9 is with a 3 and 9 team.

The next bit of wisdom from this "journalist" is:

"It is such a huge advantage for Notre Dame having all its home games televised nationally. Hard to explain how the Irish finished in the top 10 just three times in the 17 years that NBC has broadcast their home games."

Well Ken, since Notre Dame is not located in the middle of a talent rich feeder state like Texas....the answer is YES.  Notre Dame recruits in every corner of the nation.  Last years class had 23 kids from 17 states and was #2 per Rivals.com.  This is after a 3-9 season.  So yes, I think playing 2/3 of your games on NBC and a great likely hood that a couple of road games are picked up as well give Notre Dame a tremendous advantage in bringing in kids.

It also helps in keeping the national fan base of Notre Dame involved.  Something I guess you would have to see from outside of Austin.

Maybe this is why I love this site so much.  It gives fans like me just as much of an opportunity to write one sided OPINIONS and publish them like a journalist.   Just like Kirk Bohls.  No paycheck needed for me however.  Being right is payment enough.
