MLB, Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies, Game Recap

The last three days have been like a broken record.  Colorado wins, the record skips, Colorado wins, the record skips, and Colorado wins 6-3.

The only difference on Thursday was that the Indians jumped out to the early lead, something the Rockies accomplished in the first two games.  Unlike

Cleveland, though, Colorado overcame the early deficit and won.

Jeremy Sowers pitched six innings for the Tribe, scattering 10 hits and giving up four runs, three of them earned.  Jose De La Rosa also went six for the Rockies, gave up four hits and three runs, but with a whopping ten strikeouts.  He goes to 2-3 on the year.  Sowers remained winless with an 0-2 mark.

The win got the Rockies out of the cellar in the NL West.  The Indians moved one step closer to the basement, holding a slim lead over the Kansas City Royals.

It was a bad day to lose in the AL Central.  Everybody won, with the exception of the Detroit Tigers.  They had the night off.

The Indians opened the game with Grady Sizemore beating out a grounder to first for a single.  Colorado misplayed covering the base, and it could have went as a hit or an error.  After stealing second and Jamey Carroll grounding out, Ben Francisco homered and made it 2-0 Tribe.

Colorado, as they did all series, got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first.  Quintanilla hit an infield single and took second on a passed ball badly misplayed by Indians catcher Kelly Shoppach.  Holliday immediately singled to center, scoring Quintanilla.  2-1 Tribe.

In the fourth, the Rockies strung together three hits, tying the game at two apiece.  Garrett Atkins hit an infield single, Brad Hawpe doubled, and Yorvit Torrealba had the second infield single of the inning to score Atkins.

In the bottom of the fifth, Colorado moved into the lead—NL style.  Wily Taveras bunted his way on and ended up on second on a Casey Blake error.  Quintanilla sac-bunted Taveras to third, and Matt Holliday singled him home.

The Indians tied it up in the top of the sixth on a home run by Casey Blake.  That would be as close as the Indians would come to sniffing victory this whole series.

Jason Baker homered in the bottom half the sixth, and the Rockies pulled away.

Masa Kobayashi came on for the Tribe in the seventh, and surrendered three hits and two runs.

Joe Borowski worked the bottom of the eighth since he hasn’t pitched in a while, giving up a double and striking out Quintanilla to end the inning.

The Indians finished the game with three runs on five hits.  Colorado had six runs on fourteen hits.

Manny Corpas and Taylor Buchholz each earned a hold, both pitching a hitless and scoreless inning.  Brian Fuentes earned his 13th save of the season.

Cleveland takes on the L.A. Dodgers at 10:40 PM Friday; Cliff Lee against Clayton Kershaw.

Colorado remains at home for a 9:05 start against the New York Mets; John Maine versus Aaron Cook.

  1. We better be careful now, KC is catching up fast! This is critical point...Win now or the season may be over very soon.

Last night, how can we not hit that De la Rosa guy, he was shipped out of KC because he's so bad. Frustrating, just frustrating. As soon as the team begins to show any signs of life, they fall right back into the gutter. I want to still believe, but time is running out.

  2. Now I'm starting to get upset at this offense.. I'm beyond frustrated after watching that.

  3. What is really needed is new ownership. The only way you win on the cheap is to be lucky. The Indians' luck has run out.

    1. I'm really sick of this "they are too cheap thing"

The last time we opened up our pockets, John Hart got burned, and it set the franchise back longer than it should have.

Mark Shapiro has the chance to spend more, but he he isn't going to go and blow the future just for a quick fix. He's a smart operator, he is trying to get a successful team for both the present and future.

  4. It may be time to close the book on the 2008 Indians season...

I see the light but fear it may be the on coming train.

  5. rockies are starting to get hot they have won 11 out of 15 games

  6. Nino- 'Setting the franchise back' is a relative term. Ask yourself why the Yankees are almost always contending. I think you know the answer.

  7. From the looks of it.. They ain't contending for much this year.. Their team is full of old men, and they've got relatively no future.

When was the last time they won a world series again?

Do you want to contend for a playoff spot every year or win a world series?

  8. First- you have to contend! I am not a Yankee fan, but they're doing a lot better than the Tribe and they do it much more often than the Indians.

  9. You have to remember.. This is only the 2nd targeted year Shapiro had for this team to contend.. Last year was I believe the first of his blueprint that he laid out. I'd say injuries have been a big reason his team isn't contending this year. His plan has worked up to this point.

Point is this.. John Hart sent this team into a tailspin before he left. He tried to win quick and it got him no where and it destroyed the team..

The Yankees haven't won a series since they've gone to this "buy championships" philosophy.. It ain't about contending, I want to see those rings. Shapiro is trying to win rings, but he doesn't want one, he wants many, and that is what his plan is geared towards.

  10. I have nothing against Shapiro. I think he's a miracle man given the constraints that ownership has given him. Injuries are a part of the game. I'm no historian on the Indians, but didn't Hart get us into a couple world series? As far as rings, last I knew it was Yankees-26, Indians-2. That's just the facts.
